Hector Lombard Did Not Want Move To Welterweight

Hector Lombard made his name fighting as a middleweight and when he signed with the UFC he had full intention of moving up the UFC’s ranks on his way to a title shot. Plans change fast.

After going 1-2 in the UFC, with a unanimous decision win and two split decision loses, Lombard will move to the UFC’s welterweight division when he fights Nate Marquardt at UFC 166 this Fall.

The former Bellator Middleweight Champion spoke about the drop in weight and explained why it happened while appearing on “The MMA Hour”:

“That wasn’t my plans, UFC wanted me to go to 170. They believe that I have, that I will perform better at 170 than 185. I have to do what the bosses say you know. Can’t argue with the bosses. If it were up to me, I would have stayed at 185. I have to be disciplined and I have to do what they want me to do. I’ve been training hard and I think I will be able to make it and I will be able to perform better that way. They said I’m too short for 185 and I would be big at 170.”

  1. If I was Dana I would renegotiate his contract. If he wants to stay at 185 then he needs to give up some of the money he has not delivered on. Huge disappointment at 185. He should be happy to fighting guys more his size and making the money he is with the record in the UFC he has.
