Former Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem has signed with the UFC following a summer of speculation and his welcoming committee will consist of former UFC Heavyweight Champ Brock Lesnar.
Dana White announced the signing and bout today via his twitter account “This is the fight the fans want. Both of these guys are monsters. Can Lesnar take Overeem down?”
The bout will take place at UFC 141 which will take place in Las Vegas on December 30th. Due to conflicts that would likely arise from hosting an event on New Year's Eve, the event takes places on a Friday.
After a contract dispute removed Overeem from the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament due to him being unable to compete on September 10th, fans were left to wonder when or if they would see “The Reem” in action again.
As the summer wore on, rumors pointed towards Overeem not fighting for Strikeforce again but instead inside the UFC's Octagon.
Lesnar will be making his return to action for the first time since losing the UFC Heavweight Title to Cain Velasquez in October 2010.
White also revealed that the winner of the December fight will also be considered the number one contender to whoever wins the November 12th title fight between Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos.
