Inside the Numbers: Lots of effective grappling between two celebrated collegiate wrestlers in round one, as they traded reversals along the cage after Lesnar scored the round’s only takedown. Lesnar was effective with knees, preventing Couture from mounting any attack on the feet. The defending champ, returning to the UFC after a 15 month layoff, landed just six of nine total strikes.

They traded right hands on their feet early in round two. A Couture right hand opened a cut over Lesnar’s right eye. The 265-lb-plus challenger, fighting in just his fourth mma fight, answered with several right hands of his own, each one jarring the 45-year-old Couture. A sledgehammer right caught Couture high on his head, sagging him to the canvas. Lesnar then pounced, landing 23 unanswered ground strikes. Lesnar added three knees in the round to help set up the power punches.
