Last week, rumors were circulating around the internet that John “The Natural” Alessio (23-11-0) had signed a three fight contract with EliteXC and that he could be one of the next possible contenders for Jake Shields for the EliteXC Welterweight Championship.
This past weekend, MMANews.com has a chance to speak with Manager of Fight Operations for EliteXC, JD Penn, and he explained that the contract has not yet been signed.
“It's almost done” stated Penn “I know on the internet they are saying that the deal is done and that we have signed him, but the contract doesn't end with his signature yet.”
Alessio was a top contender in the WEC Welterweight division but after being disqualified in his last fight in the organization, (due to a knee to a downed Brock Larson) was unable to come to terms with the company and decided to go elsewhere. In his last fight, Alessio defeated Pete Spratt with a rear naked choke submission in the second round of their contest that took place in June.
Penn also explained the plans the company has for Alessio when the contract is officially signed, “We want to build John Alessio up to the fans to show that he is a suitable contender to Jake Shields in the Welterweight division.”
Shields won the EliteXC title on July 26th beating up on a game Nick Thompson at the second EliteXC and CBS: Saturday Night Fights.
**NOTE** Penn also went on to tell MMANews.com that although Gina Carano and Cristiane Cyborg will not be fighting in the next CBS card, they do have a surprise planned for after Carano's fight should she win against Kelly Kobald-Gavin
