Even if you assume that Sonnen is gonna lose, it's not like Vitor is worlds above him.

Sonnen last 5: W's- Bisping and Stann L's-Silva 2xs, Bones (assumed [not by me]) Vitor last 5: W's- Akiyama, Bisping, and Rumble L's- Silva and Bones (not assumed)

Under the logic that common wins and losses cancel out, it is basically a loss to Silva and a victory over Stann versus a win over Akiyama and a win over Rumble. Me personally, I would rather have almost beating Anderson Silva plus the Stann win over Vitor's 2 victories. Obviously as far as the rankings go 2-0 trumps 1-1, but my point is that Vitor isn't far ahead of Sonnen even if Sonnen loses to Bones.
