He said he couldn't see after the illegal knee in the 5th round and that was why the fight was stopped. At the post fight conference he also mentioned that he broke his hand in the 2nd or 3rd round, and people got upset and thought that might be the real reason he quit. But throughout the whole fight, Varner was without a doubt winning the striking exchanges, even with the broken hand.
