Ok, I have some things to say on this subject since I became a fan while Matt Hughes was dominating and GSP was a noob. First off, let me begin by saying I have always thought GSP was better than Matt simply because of his hybrid fighting background. Matt, was great and could still win some key match ups, but this is not one of them. I see lots of you like to hear concrete examples so let's go... I think it is best to start with the fighters they have both faced. Sean Sherk - It took Matt all 5 rounds to pound out a decision. It took St. Pierre a couple of rounds to stop him. BJ Penn - Matt got whooped the first time and disgraced himself (I love watching the highlight of him looking like a deer caught in the headlights right after the referee stopped it. And then BJ kissed him!!! Classic!!) Then in their second encounter, Penn owned Matt until he suffered that separated rib injury. GSP on the other hand only lost the first round to Penn and then (all bloodied up) turned it up the last 2 rounds to pull out a well deserved decision (showing a champion's heart imo). Moving on to Trigg. Personally I don't think that highly of Trigg as a fighter since he lost the same way to both guys 3 times!! However, Frank Trigg did state after his fight with GSP that "GSP was the BEST fighter he has ever faced" and if you have seen that bout, it is the epitome of total ownership you know kinda like the last match between the two guys this post is dedicated to (all one sided for GSP). Even in their first bout, GSP was serving Hughes up before Matt hit that great armbar.
Let's move on to their strengths... So Hughes is supposed to be this great wrestler who can ground and pound anyone. Well, let's see him get GSP down first because he couldn't last time! I mean GSP even looked like a wrestling stud against Koscheck who is widely regarded as the best wrestler the UFC has ever seen.
You know after I typed all of this, I am thinking what the hell is the guy who started this thread smoking?? And more importantly is it for sale?? Anyway, I truly believe in what I am saying and I think Dec. 29 will be the same as last year. I just hope and pray that GSP doesn't look past Hughes like he did with Serra because that is the only kink in his game.
