As far as Brock being paid more than long time fighters. If you own a business, and you have employees there who have been with you for awhile. They bring in, lets say 100,000 in revenue a year each. You interview a potential employee who can clearly bring in 500,000 in revenue. To get this employee, do you pay him/her more ? Of course you do, this is a business.
We as fans often forget this is a business because we love it so much. Tim Sylvia is a world class fighter even though i'm not a huge fan. However, he doesn't put asses in seats. His competition usually does. No one really broke stride when he left the UFC. Perhaps that's unfortunate, but it just IS.
From a strictly business perspective, you pay the fighters who sell tickets and ppvs. It's that simple.
By the way, I have all my employees sign a confidentiality agreement is regard to their salaries. I've always wondered why this can't be done in MMA to protect the fragile egos of other fighters. |
The thing is, Tim Sylvia has fought on cards that did great PPV buys as well. He was the main event of 59, 61, 68, and 81 and all those brought in great numbers. I don't think it is fair to say that those pay per views only sold well becuase of Brock, or Tito etc. Tim was the main event and he should get some props.
And the Athletic Commisions require that the pay be known to the public, but I do know that not all Athletic Commisions do. That's why we still don't know what some fighters got paid for certain shows, for example UFC 69 I think.
