I think most of you need to take a xanax or something and chill out.
Don't worry, Bret Hart's comments won't get MMA banned, so you can relax.
If you read what he says carefully, you'd get that he enjoys the sport, he enjoys watching it, and he's commenting more on us as humans than the sport and the athletes.
He makes the remark comparing his match with Steve Austin, the one with the infamous shot of Austin, face bloodied, screaming in pain, and states that that match gave the impression of the most vicious of fights, but neither man was seriously injured. However, if in an MMA fight, if a man was bleeding as Austin was bleeding (his face, every inch, was covered in blood) that he could be in serious danger, especially if he was refusing to tap in a submission move.
What I got out of the article was that his concern was our addiction to violence as people is what concerns him.
Face it guys, go to your local wing spot or sports bar the night an MMA event is on, and chances are, you and your group of friends/guys you know, are the only ones who are watching that aren't screaming
"Knock that motherfucker out!"
"Hit'em you pussy!"
"Stop hugging on him you pussy! Stand them up!"
If anything, Bret Hart appears to understand MMA, and the difference between that and wrestling. In wrestling, they can have constant, face-paced action all the time, because the results are pre-determined, so the crowd doesn't get bored as quickly, all the while keeping the athletes as safe as possible.
But as you and I both know, MMA matches are not always fast paced, knockout wars, and the casual fan who does not know the difference between "ultimate fighting/cage fighting" and mixed martial arts does not understand that. They want the old UFC rules where it was basically bare-knuckle fights on TV. Sad to say, because I like his attitude and his drive to learn, but this is why a Kimbo Slice can headline an event and sell with only 3 fights under his belt, but you can ask 10 people who GSP is and maybe 2-3 will know.
These are the people who always think the fight has been stopped early, that there should be no ground fighting unless someone has the full mount, etc because they want to see blood, violence, defenseless people beat into they're next to dead.
Maybe I just read into it more than others, but I don't have a problem with what Bret Hart said. From what I read, he seems pretty intelligent.
