It's actually really common for athletes to become morbidly obese once they've stopped actively competing. So much of their life has been focused on diet being tied to specific external goals...once the goals are removed it's like a dam bursts, and they don't have the exercise routine to burn away the extra calories that they'd relied on in the past.

I hope he does well, in life if not on the show.
