I'd agree that may be the case at times, but for a lot of fans of the sport we just want to see a great fighter wanting to be great. I honestly believe even the biggest Silva haters will acknowledge he's a great talent.
The discourse comes when the declarations of great champion are being made. Most fans just don't want to hear a champion saying anything other than "I'll fight anyone, anytime". Silva always seems to be telling us why fighters don't deserve a shot, meanwhile he takes and asks for pointless vanity fights as rh describes them. His recent statements are the most inflammatory and most telling. He's not a fool to fight Weidman, he's a fool to make those statements.
I don't believe he's afraid of Weidman. I think he's afraid of losing the title at the end of his career. He wants to retire as an undefeated fighter in the UFC and he'll do it by whatever means necessary at the end. This is entirely unbecoming of a great champion. Still a great fighter, just not a great champion.
