In addition to the investigation Sniggles posted, there were two other factors at work with the PRIDE deal: the first being that the UFC got absolutely FUCKED on that deal, as in utterly taken to the cleaners and given a product worth pennies on the dollar that they paid for it. Zuffa thought they'd be getting individual fighter contracts [ne: Fedor] and got the shaft instead. So they were bitter about paying 30x more than they should have for essentially boils down to rights to a video catalogue. It's just one of the [many] things that makes me laugh when people try to paint dana as a good/smart businessman.
The second issue was that the Yakuza was so deeply embedded in the distribution rights, that it was virtually impossible for them to do business in Japan at that point.
