penn get the decision over edgar in their first fight, (which could be argues as is).

the next in line was maynard, who i don't think had anything for penn. without that year and a half of LW logjam, (two penn/edgar and maynard/edgar fights), penn could have defended against a few more contenders. bendo hadn't risen to top contender yet, so nate diaz and jim miller come to mind, or a rematch with florian, all of which i see penn winning at the time.

hell, the title shot could have gone to maynard instead of edgar. if i remember correctly, it was the same ppv, (in jan or feb) where maynard eeked out a standup win over diaz, and edgar submitted matt veach. dana and joe silva gave edgar the shot because maynard's win was so so, even though (at the time) either of them would have been at least 4-to-1 underdog to penn, (or maybe even more than that... because i remember penn/edgar 2 still had penn favored nearly 3-to-1)
