If he does not want Gustafsson, why not say that if Hendo beats Machida, then Hendo will be the next for a title shot??

But no. Once again they decide to skip the legit contenders and give it to a guy that has zero fights in the LHW division only because they like him.
Cormier is a very good fighter, and I think he could be a threat for Jones. But once again this is another bitchslap to Gustafsson, Machida and Henderson.
Like I said, injuries will be key in the coming months. What if the winner of Hendo/Machida is badly injured and needs 6-12 months off? That's why they probably announced Gusaffsson as #1 contender to fill that slot.

What if either Machida/Henderson gets injured? Gustaffson can step in and keep himself busy and put another win in.

What if Sonnen gets injured? Gustaffson can step in and get his title shot. Or he may decline it, not being entirely ready, and the UFC can slot Cormier in there. It would make sense then.

Cormier fights in 2 weeks. I dont think he will be waiting around. He will work on his diet, and get a fight in at LHW to see how he feels. I can the UFC giving him the winner of Rashad/Lil Nog. Perhaps Phil Davis, Vinny.

Either way, with Jones/Sonnen fighting in April, the next contender will be waiting until late summer to fight again. Anything can happen. We all know the injury situation. Nobody wants a UFC 151 bs again. UFC is looking to be prepared for all possible outcomes.

The whole point is, the UFC is throwing names out there, putting these guys in the spotlight to get buzz going about them so that when these guys happen to step in for someone injured, the fans know who they are.
