When calling for retirement, I think of Liddell as my standard. The difference between him and Liddell is Liddell reached a point where he couldn't take a punch and his speech was slurring. BJ's just reached a point where he's predictable and lazy.
I have to disagree with you about him being top 5 at LW. The division is so deep right now and with his career being on the decline I don't see him breaking the top 10. Guys like Diaz, Miller, Cerrone, or Pettis would put a serious hurt on him.
As far as the Chuck Liddell standard for retirement, fan or not, I hate seeing anyone get to that point. Let's face it, he's not the BJ he used to be. I just think it's best for some guys, including Penn, to hang it up before they get to the same point as Garry Goodridge.
I see this situation being comparable to Wanderlei Silva's. I'm a fan of his and I don't want to see him go away. The fan in me wants to see him keep fighting even though he's far past his prime. But another part of me is concerned for his well being and thinks he needs to stop.
*sigh* I just made myself sad
