UFC locks up Boston Pizza for multi-year sponsorship

The “Ground and Pound Burger” or the “Octagonal Pizza” may soon be headed for the menu at Boston Pizza.

The casual dining chain has entered into a “multi-year” sponsorship agreement with the world’s foremost mixed martial arts organization, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

The deal makes the national chain – which operates more than 340 restaurants coast to coast – an exclusive partner of UFC in Canada. According to the two parties, the deal will provide Boston Pizza patrons with an “enhanced UFC experience” that could potentially include in-restaurant appearances by UFC fighters as well as UFC-related menu items.

Boston Pizza has been showing UFC pay-per-view events in its restaurants for several years, its involvement with mixed martial arts increasing as fan interest in the sport explodes.

Speaking with Marketing Tuesday, Steve Silverstone, executive vice-president of marketing for Boston Pizza in Mississauga, Ont., described UFC as a perfect fit with the chain’s core target of “dads and dudes.”

“We’ve been working on developing a partnership with UFC for the six months, and were able to reach an agreement that makes sense for the franchisee community and, most importantly, provide added value for guests,” said Silverstone. “We’ve got the momentum of the Canadian UFC events behind us and we’re looking forward to a long-term partnership.”

Groovy. I've been with some friends to Boston Pizza (for UFC nights) and it's usually been enjoyable. Though, there is the ocassional teeth-gritting experience with some of the other patrons; obnoxious, loud, low-iq, "meat-heads" if you will. At one point one was hitting on another family member who was accompanying us. Suffice to say, we remained quite patient throughout the night. But the service and food, as well as pricing, is quite nice.

Are you guys real or joking lol?

Boston Pizza is a resturant chain. We have em all over in BC, they usually have a lounge and shit attached to em. Typical chain that caters to a younger crowd.

I honestly thought it was an american chain for the longest time but apparently so. They actually changed their name (promotionally) during the finals of Vancouver vs Boston, considering they are Canadian to "Vancouver Pizza". Was funny to see the crossed out Boston on the boards.

Boston Pizza International Inc. and Ultimate Fighting Championship® announced today a multi-year sponsorship agreement that makes Boston Pizza, Canada’s number one casual dining brand and sports bar, an exclusive partner of the UFC® in Canada.

“As a brand that focuses on giving our guests more of what they want, we are thrilled to be partnering with UFC Canada to give the many dedicated MMA fans who watch live events at our restaurants the best possible experience,” said Steve Silverstone, Executive Vice President of Marketing, Boston Pizza International. “The UFC has built an incredible brand with passionate fans and we’re excited to have it associated with Boston Pizza sports bars.”

This new agreement gives Boston Pizza locations in Canada the opportunity to provide guests with an enhanced UFC experience when watching Pay-Per-View events at participating restaurant locations across the country. As the official sports bar and pizza of the UFC in Canada, Boston Pizza also gains premium access to tickets and other unique experiences available only at Boston Pizza.

“We are thrilled to bring the UFC to Boston Pizza locations all across the country,” said UFC Director of Canadian Operations Tom Wright. “Boston Pizza creates a one-of-a-kind atmosphere for its customers. Our goal is to provide UFC fans with the ultimate viewing experience and Boston Pizza is the perfect partner to further that mission.”

“Our category exclusivity and partnership with UFC Canada will provide Boston Pizza with unique promotional opportunities, enhanced point-of-sale materials and athlete appearances, which will strengthen our brand as the premier sports destination in Canada,” said Silverstone.

There's a couple of newer Boston Pizza's near where I live. One of the better casual places to eat IMO. Also, their bar sections are the best of any casual restaurant I've been to, even the ones that claim the "sports bar" scene is their specialty.
