Peter new heavyweight champion!
WBC awards interim title to 'Nigerian Nightmare'
With the back injury suffered by WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev putting him out of action for at least for the next 3 or 4 months according to his lawyer, the WBC Board of Governors has voted to name Samuel Peter as the WBC heavyweight interim world champion. Peter will be presented with the WBC interim belt in the coming days. Promoter Don King is still hoping to salvage the October 6 card in New York City, but will need to find a suitable opponent for Peter and get the WBC, Madison Square Garden and the premium network to buy off on the new foe. In any event, once Maskaev comes back, the WBC will order a mandatory bout for the undisputed WBC title with a purse split of 55% for Maskaev and 45% for Peter, subject to change by the WBC. If Maskaev doesn't come back within one year, Peter will be named full champion.
Rumor has it Jameel McCline has the inside track to be Peter's opponent on October 6.

I think this is a good decision. Plus, with all of the shit Peter has been though, going all the way back to the rematch with Toney, he really deserves this.

I agree he deserves it but I hate seeing titles being decided this way, hope the Don can put togeter a good fight to give the title some respect.

But at this stage the HW division is in such a mess its hard to give a damn about it anymore..... Sad days for HW boxing..... Where did it all go wrong guys?

That's true, but what's the alternative? Maskaev is out at least 3 to 4 months and the heavyweight division desperately needs a fight.

So give Peter the real WBC title (which would be a lil unfair) or have a title eliminator with someone else.

The belt is worth the same if they just give it to him though. I mean he didnt "earn" it. And Peter has already had to fight Toney twice and go through a legal battle with Vitali to be considered #1 contender. I dont think its fair to make him fight someone else just to retain the spot he has already earned. The whole situation is so shitty.

If Peter somehow loses to McCline (he won't), how much do any of you wanna bet that Maskaev's back gets "miraculously" healed? What's truly ironic is that Maskaev had to do everything he could to get his mandatory rights enforced before he fought Rahman because Rahman was looking for other fights. Then he turns around and tries to give Peter the run-around. Still, I would have preferred for the the Peter/McCline fight to have been for the interim title, instead of just giving it to Peter. Either way, when Peter finally gets Maskaev in the ring, he'll have earned the legit (and I say that someone tentatively) WBC title.
