Despite the accident, Pavlik's rematch with former champion Jermain Taylor is still on for February 16. The fight will be at 166 pounds, however, Pavlik's title will not be on the line.

Taylor had the rematch clause in his contract, but was the clause not for a title fight? I never looked up the specifics, but I assumed Pavlik's title would be up for grabs.
What is the point in having the former champ fight the current champ, if there is nothing on the line?

I didn't think it would be for the title. i mean this is at a higher weight class, so why would the belt be. I mean that belt is for that weight class not 5 pounds above.

I think this way if Taylor wins he can say cutting the weight just took to much out of him.

When it boils down, titles don't really means hit anyway. Everybody will know that Taylor beat him, if he beats him. Good luck beating Pavlic though.

I am just saying it gives Taylor an excuse to why he lost

Yeah, this was what was in the contract, as far as the rematch clause goes. The rematch would be at something like 164 or 166 lbs. The same thing'll happen though, except I expect Pavlik will do much better in stopping Taylor. For all this talk about Taylor having to sweat and struggle to make 160, people don't realize that Pavlik is a bigger guy than Taylor and he too has to sweat and struggle to make 160. When all's said and done, Pavlik and Taylor will probably end up wrapping up their careers at 175 anyway, after a lengthy stopover at 168, where most of the big fights will be in the next several years (Kessler, Miranda, Lacy, Taylor, Bute, Froch, Inkin, Andrade, Mundine, and eventually Pavlik).

But at any weight, I think Pavlik stops Taylor, and it'll be even more impressive in the upcoming rematch.

What if in the rematch Taylor kicks Pavlicks ass for 8 rounds and then KO's him in very convincing fashion? Wouldn't it take away from Pavlick's credibility as champion even if it was at a slightly diffrent weight.

I'm not nearly as excited about this fight now that I know it's non-title. I'm sure it will be good, and I plan to watch it, but I'm a little disappointed.

What the hell? whats the point of having this match without the title on the line, I don't think I will get this fight now that it's not for the title, I am not spending that kind of money for a non-title match, screw that.

What the hell is the difference? It's gonna be a great fight either way.. Who cares if some piece of metal is on the line.

Exactly! But goes to show you why they have all these titles now. Some fans put a lot of importance on it.

Correct me if i'm wrong but.. boxing matches don't go up in rounds for championship fights do they?.. I don't get why some hunk of junk makes people more excited to see 2 very good fighters go at it..
