Cotto-margarito Set For July 28th

The Fight Network has learned that the rumored welterweight unification war between WBA champion Miguel Cotto, and reigning IBF champion Antonio Margarito, is now a reality, with the slugfest slated for July 26th.

A site for the bout has yet to be locked down, but a source close to the situation informed The Fight Network that Vegas, not New York, as has been widely speculated, is the preferred locale.
This is a fight i want to see, Cotto's power vs Margarito's chin. I would like to see Cotto win, just so a fight with Mayweather seems bigger.

Margarito does have the power to KO Cotto, but if he does, PBF will have a hell of an easier time dancing Margarito around to a victory.

Man, I can't even tell you guys how excited I am for this fight. This is about the only matchup made this year that could even come close to rivaling Vazquez/Marquez III as the Fight of the Year.

I dunno though, it's too even for me to call right now. Cotto's got the boxing skills, more speed, and sharper tools, but Margarito is about THE hardest man in the game, incredibly tough and relentless. Both of them are exquisite body punchers, both of them have roughly equal power, and both of them are bound and determined to impose their own will on their opponent. I see no way this fight could possibly even average, it says greatness on every level.

Either way, Mayweather has no excuse to not fight the winner of this fight should he beat de la Hoya again. Ducking the Cotto/Margarito winner would be tantamount to yelling from the mountaintops that he's a giant pussy.

Damn, I can't even pick, both of 'em are a couple of my favorite fighters around. I just wanna see these two get it on. July can't come soon enough.

If Cotto wins, would that make him the number 2 p4p fighter in the world. With a good argument to be number 1.

I say this because its clear that PBF wants nothing to do with Margarito, and isn't to fond of fighting Cotto, and even more if Cotto wins.

Cotto would have beaten Zab, Margarito and Shane just for starters. I mean he finished Zab, and Shane is a great fighter so is Margarito.

The argument would be even stronger if PBF ducked an refused to fight Cotto.

I dislike Margarito but he is a damn exciting fighter and a tough man. It will be a very very hard fight for Cotto, and i think this fight could very well be a foty candidate.

I see Cotto taking a very close UD.

by the way great post Salvy an repped for it.

Cotto firmly entrenches himself in the top 5 with a win, as ell as mandating himself as the only man to fight Mayweather. Margarito probably vaults himself into the top 10 with a win, and stamps himself as the only man to fight Mayweather.

DLH says he would like to fight Cotto if both of them win their fights against Margarito and Mayweather to close out his career in December. If Margarito wins, look for a rematch.

Now that Mayweather's out of the way, this fight is now for who's gonna be The Man at welterweight. As far as I'm concerned, Cotto or Margarito will be the real champ. And really, both men have a pretty realistic shot at fighting DLH in December provided either one of them comes out with a win. DLH/Cotto would be more likely, but hell, DLH/Margarito would be a big fight too, especially out here in California.

But don't forget about Paul Williams. After July, Williams can be no worse than the #2 man at 147, and if Margarito wins, I think Williams would probably be the #1, considering he beat Margarito last year.

Can't wait 'till July man.
