Sergio Mora, in his first world championship fight, wrested the WBC Super Welterweight belt from veteran champion Vernon Forrest with a hard-fought majority decision at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn. Ringside judges scored the bout 116-112, 115-113 and 114 a piece. In the co-feature Saturday on SHOWTIME, Paul Williams recaptured the WBO Welterweight title that he lost to Carlos Quintana in February with a spectacular first-round TKO.

I remember watching first Contender series and thinking this guy would never make it in the big leagues. Shows hard work pays off.

Yeah, Mora really took it to Forrest, good for him. Now that Mayweather's "retired", Mora has a surprisingly good shot at landing the DLH Sweepstakes come September or December. Both East L.A. raised boxers, both Mexican Americans, and Mora brings both a title and popularity with him. He can beat Oscar too, especially if he brings that consistent body attack and high energy. Mora doesn't hit hard per se, even to the body, but considering how poor Oscar's gas tank has typically been, well, I think he has as good a chance as anyone at beating him.

I would prefer, though, for Oscar to fight the winner of Cotto/Margarito for his last fight. Oscar would probably get his ass kicked, but that willingness to fight the best is what's always made Oscar, well, Oscar.

Mora can't beat DLH. He's a good fighter but no where near the calibur of DLH.

The Forrest we saw today was not the undefeated Olympian who ran through the division for years. He looked really good in the first couple of rounds then he lost it. I think age has caught up with him. A Forrest of about 5 years ago would have swept the floor with Mora.

You have a point, but how much of Forrest's career was based off his two wins over Shane Mosley, the exact kind of fighter tailor-made for his style? I don't quite recall, but who else has Forrest beaten in his career other than Mosley? He got killed by Mayorga twice, received a gift decision from a faded Quartey, and really never did all that much in his career, other than Mosley.

Yeah, he probably would have beaten Mora 5 years ago if he had gotten up for Mora the way he was undoubtedly up for Mosley. But Forrest doesn't get up for fights. And it cost him, both 6 years ago against Mayorga, and now.

Well in reguards to the loss to Mayorga, he did have a very serious shoulder injury that effected him in both fights. He eventually got surgury for it. IMO that's the only reason he lost to Mayorga.

Until Mosley, he didn't have a break through fight, but to say SSM is just simply tailor made for Forrest is really diminishing Forrest's credentials.

IMO you don't just have a style that's tailor made for someone for fighter of that calibur. Sure Baldomir is tailor made for PBF because of the extreme difference in skill and the Boxer vs slugger aspect.

Mosley and Forrest were both world class Boxers and one was extremely fast and skilled and the other, extremely skilled with a height and reach advantage. Forrest just had a masterful gameplan, kept SSM at a distance and tied him up when they clintched. Accually, Forrest's style is very simular to B Hop IMO.

Anywayz, beating Mosley proves that Forrest was the truth IMO.

Point taken, I think I'm just a little bitter that Mosley actually lost to Forrest to begin with. Mosley, more than anyone, deserves to be an enormous Oscar-level superstar. It just really sucks that people wrote him off for having the balls to fight Forrest in the first place, fight a rematch with him, then after losing those fights and beating Oscar again, have the balls to fight the guy no one wanted to fight in Winky Wright...and losing twice.

And I wanted Oscar to beat Mosley the first time around! But Mosley made me a fan. So I suppose my judgement in terms of the Forrest/Mosley fights is clouded by bias, and it really shouldn't be. I guess I just never got over it, the way I still haven't gotten over the Oscar/Trinidad fight.

In my perfect boxing world, Oscar/Mosley becomes a trilogy, Mosley at least avenges his losses to Forrest and Wright, then goes on to slap Mayweather around for 12 rounds in 2006 after winning the welterweight title back again after slapping Vargas around those two times. Meanwhile, Oscar beats Trinidad, suffers his first loss to Mosley, goes up to kick Vargas' ass, gets his win back in the second fight with Mosley, and whatever outcome happens in that hypothetical rubber match, it wouldn't have mattered to me. He also looks good in beating Sturm, and suffers a competitive loss to Hopkins where he looks good but is just too small.

I've been drinking too much lately. The Finals are getting me all out of sorts, and it's really starting to get to me. I can't handle another one of my teams going down so close to a title (Patriots and UCLA earlier this year).
