Roy Jones Jr vs Joe Calzaghe LHW Belt 09/20/2008 ESPN - Light heavyweight champ Calzaghe set to face Jones on Sept. 20 - Boxing Now.. Roy Jones Jr is my all-time favorite boxer no doubt but.. vs Calzaghe at his age.. hard to say that Roy will win this but he does have a few things going for him.. I mean It is at Roy Jones weight class.. Calzaghe does have to move up to face Roy in at a weight hes only fought once at.. Calzaghe has been knocked down a few times.. notably by guys that dont have a lot of punching power like Bernard Hopkins and Kabary Saleem.. Roy Jones Jr still might be the fastest guy Calz has ever faced.. and Roy despite the lack of comp hes faced lately.. has still looked like a smarter boxer then he was vs Tarver 2x and Glen Johnson.. being that it is Roy Jones weight class.. he might pull the upset. |
I might get burned for this but I'm not impressed by Calzaghe anyways he couldn't even finish old man Hopkins but yeah I would love to watch this fight Roy might be on the ups, he did look good against Tito even though Roy came down for a catchweight. Interesting though. |

Tito was just way too small. I think RJJ may get KO'd in this fight, he needs to retire. I'm picking Cal by KO in the 7th. I hope I'm wrong though. |
Who has Joe ever beat that is dangerous in their prime. Even if he does beat Roy that doesn't prove anything. I still think Kelly would knock the piss out of him, i also think Taylor would too. but anyway Roy by UD |
been waiting for this fight to be announced for a bit, but i agree aswell that kelly owuld school calzaghe |
I know i shouldn't buy into what Boxing analysis say but i agree with them when they say Joe hasn't really beaten anyone. Just a bunch of people who were over hyped or to old. |
Joe is verrrrry much overhyped.. got knocked down by Kabary Salem, Byron Mitchell, and Bernard Hopkins... neither known for great punching power.. Hes truly never beaten anyone in there prime.. and even so.. his wins are merely just him surviving and outpointing his opponent.. but more-so of him just surviving.. when in reality.. one can question Joe Calzaghe's chin and how much punishment it can really take vs Roy Jones.. as old as Roy is.. Joe is still gonna get hit a lot.. hes still gonna get hit hard.. vs the fastest opponent hes ever faced.. that also has more punching power then any boxer that has knocked Joe down before.. Roy Jones can really play the upset role here the stage is just nearly perfect for him to show up, and beat Joe Calzaghe.. this could be Roy Jones last hoorah in boxing.. Joe Calzaghe is the perfect opponent for Roy Jones to legitimize his boxing career because Calzaghe right now has a ton of hype behind him.. viewed as a great boxer.. but yet hes very vulnerable.. and Roy Jones can catch him, put him out.. and win his last big fight of his career.. and just walk away from boxing on top. |
i really feel rjj is gonna win this and walk about from the sport. I don't know why but i think joe is gonna go down and stay down in like the 6th |
Calzaghe made Jeff Lacy seem overhyped, it almost looks like the took Lacy's career from him that night in Manchester back in '06. He also took Mikkel Kessler to school last year, and Kessler is pretty close to his prime. Jones isn't going to win this fight. Even though the ages are similar, Calzaghe is much better preserved and Jones doesn't have his reflexes or his old explosion. Unless he can catch Calzaghe with a counter on the way in, Calzaghe outworks and outhustles him to a clear decision, or even a late-round stoppage that would do more damage to Jones' health than getting stretched by Tarver or Johnson did to him. Keep in mind that Calzaghe wanted Jones and Hopkins years ago, but they never wanted a piece of him, so he had to make do with the limited competition at 168, at a time when competition at 160 and 175 were fairly limited as well. |

Hopkins never ducked anyone and would've wrecked Calzaghe in his prime. A lot of people had Hopkins winning that decision as it was. The fight was that close. Since Jones toyed with Hopkins when he was at his best, I'd say a prime Roy Jones would've decimated Calzaghe. As for a fight between both guys in their current states, you gotta go with Joe at this point, but Jones is still a very dangerous opponent. |
