Pacquiao Makes History
3:47pm UK, Sunday November 15, 2009
Manny Pacquiao has become the first boxer in history to win titles at seven different weights after beating Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas.
The Filipino won the fight to take the WBO Welterweight title with a technical knockout in the final round at the MGM Grand hotel and casino.
Referee Kenny Bayless finally stopped the fight 55 seconds into the 12th round, when it was clear Puerto Rican champion Cotto was struggling to defend himself.
Pacquiao, however, looked unstoppable for the third consecutive fight after impressive performances against Oscar De La Hoya last December and Ricky Hatton in May.
This was only the second time he has fought as a welterweight and it looks like he will face American Floyd Mayweather next.
The Filipino dominated from the second round onwards, knocking Cotto down twice.
After the fight he said: "I tried my best to knock him out. I thought in 11th round they would stop the fight. I am surprised he continued. Everybody was saying he was bigger and stronger than me so I wanted to try and test his power."
It was only the second time Cotto has lost in his career and he had high praise for Pacquiao: "I fought everybody and Manny is one of the best all time. I didn't know from where the punches were coming and I didn't protect myself from the punches."
Cotto's trainer Joe Santiago asked his fighter if he wanted to stop after the eighth round but he said no. His father also tried to end the contest after the 11th round, but was voted down by the other members of the corner team.
Cotto was unable to attend the post-fight news conference as he had to go to hospital for treatment and x-rays to check for broken bones.
Pacquiao, on the other hand, went on to perform an eight song set at a nearby casino. | Boxing Manny Pacquiao Beats Miguel Cotto To Win WBO Welterweight Title | Home | Sky News

Pacquiao is extremely fast, if there is a man that can defeat Mayweather, its him.

Still, Manny is the best hope of ending Floyd's perfect run. He can punch from just about any angle, has power at any weight, and has only gotten better as the years have gone on.

Sorry to disappoint you guys but Manny will not beat PBF. Cotto was like a sitting duck and was too slow to get out of the way of Manny's punches, that will not be the case with PBF. Floyd's greatest asset are his speed and elusiveness. Manny will not be able to hit Floyd as cleanly as he did cotto, and manny will get hit ALOT.

Sounds like you know what you're talking about...

Yes I did say Cotto was going to win and I am man enough to admit I was wrong. Has every prediction you've ever made been right? I highly doubt it.

There was even the so-called Boxing experts whom had predicted Cotto will destroy Pacquiao and do so in the first few rounds. Pacquiao played Cotto like a fiddle.
Pacquiao vs Mayweather is a tough fight to call, to be honest. At this very moment, it's quite unfair to say Mayweather would beat Pacquiao and vice versa. Mayweather just got back in the game and his win over Marquez was less than impressive. Pacquiao have been active in his absence and from now until their fight, should they fight, Pacquiao will sharpen his tools.
It'll be epic for sure and if there's any active Boxer at this time whom have the best chance at beating Mayweather, then it's certainly Pacquiao. But I'm not he'll beat Mayweather, just saying he does have a chance.

You say Pacman has never faced anyone like PBF, but when has PBF ever faced anyone as powerful, fast, and swarming as Pacman? With some of the best cardio I've ever seen to boot.
De La Hoya arguably out worked PBF and look what Pacman did to him? Look at what Pacman did to hatton in 2 rounds; PBF was arguably losing that fight aswell.
Look at this fight stylistically. P4P Pacman is the much faster, stronger, smoking joe frazier (with George Forman type power) to PBF's Mahammed Ali. Tailor made for disaster.
Do you really see PBF keeping manny off of him for 12 rounds? People forget that PBF came up in weight from 130lbs himself so this is not as dangerous a fight as Cotto. And PBF will do well, but he will fade. Jose luis Castillo almost beat PBF WTF do you think he's going to do to Pacman!?
Stop acting like you know WTF you're talking about you sound silly, especially when you were wrong as 2 left shoes in the Cotto fight.
