sempaiman is on a distinguished road

Question That's close enough!

Just want to know if anyone else picked up on what I've seen now a number of times in UFC matches. Some of Tim Sylvias' fights and a couple of other ones. That when a guy has the other guy in the mount and is reigning punches at the other guys head he will land one and hit the mat with the next two or three and then the ref will stop the match. Is this one of these understood rules like the "in vicinity play" in baseball?

I don't think it has anything to do with being close, but one fight that Sylvia had that was stopped I remember him missing and punching the mat 3 or four times after the dude was already out.

I think your'e talking about his first title defense against Gan McGee. I'm not the biggest Sylvia fan but that knockout was brutal.

I think that it is one of those understood rules. When a guy knows he is in control of the fight and his opponent is out, he purposely punches the mat. I'm sure it is because he doesn't want to inflict any unneeded damage on his oppenent. However, I remember one of Josh Koshchek's fights against some opponent-forget who-when Koshcheck had him knocked out, and this rule should have applied, but then still nailed him with 2 or 3 more brutal punches to the face. He is an asshole.

I remember Robbie Lawler KO'ing the octagon floor with a big punch during his fight against Tiki Ghosn at UFC 40 (Shamrock-Ortiz I)
