Probably Rich Franklin. Depends who you talk too I suppose.
People saying Sylvia... lol
He is rated as the *world* hw champion by the vast majority of English speaking fans. Seems to me he is very much OVERrated.

Tim Sylvia is obviously the #1 underated fighter in MMA today. Tim would have to ko Fedor before getting any kind of respect and his haters would still make up excuses and call it a fluke. Maybe the #2 underated fighter is Diego Sanchez. Alot of ppl are really just hating on Diego and i dont know why. He's a really good fighter with the potential to be a great fighter. But just seems like he's not getting the respect he deserves. Maybe if he beats Karo then things might change but they didnt for Tim when he beat AA twice.

Ok, I’m gunna try to keep this short since I’m getting rather tired of kicking this topic starter’s ass in Tim Sylvia debates… If anyone wants to see why this thread was really started read through the ‘Tim Sylvia beatdown’ thread.
First of all, it is utterly meaningless that I and many others dislike Tim Sylvia. One's motivation for asserting X has no bearing whatsoever on whether X is true. To suppose otherwise is to commit a fallacy of irrelevance well known to logicians as the "Genetic Fallacy."
In real terms, I dislike Tim and also think he is an under-skilled champion. Even if the only reason I thought he was an under-skilled champion was because I disliked him, that doesn’t mean it is untrue. Despite this, my reasons for disliking him are totally separate from my reasons for thinking he has a low skill level for a champion.
Many seem to be citing the number of ‘Tim haters’ to be the reason why they feel he is underrated. This is a fallacious argument as I have shown above, and is not worth responding to.
Ok, so there is no longer a valid case for him being underrated (other that opinion) expressed in this thread… now I will expand my case for him being overrated:
Just using ball park figures, and the US fan base….
Let’s say 9/10 mma fans in the US are ‘casual’ and have no clue about how shitty the UFC hw division really is, or even that other competitive promotions exist. These fans, whether they like Tim or hate him, whether they enjoy watching him or fall asleep watching him, they all see him as the WORLD HW CHAMP.
I think it is fair to say these fans all overrate Tim as there is no way he should be considered the champion of the world.
The other 1/10 fans frequent discussion boards such as this. They know some of Pride’s heavyweights would most likely kill Tim in round 1. It is quite possible that Tim is underrated in this group however, even if 100% of this group underrates him (which they certainly don’t!), 9/10 US fans overrate him so…
Tim, on average, is OVERRATED!
It will be interesting to see if anyone can reason their belief that he is underrated beyond the terminally flawed ‘he is hated, yet is the champ.’

I think the MMA community would implode or something if Sylvia ever fights, and upsets, the Big 3. Everyone's heads would blow up.

lol@Tank Abbott being underrated. The guy has like a 9-11 record. If anything he is overrated by far. All he does is get subbed easily pretty much every match recently. He has no submission defense and all he does is swing for the fences. Exciting fighter to watch, but hardly underrated.
I can't call Sylvia underrated because he overrates himself with his mouth.
I'd go with Babalu. He's a solid fighter with a 10 fight win streak and is very humble. It seems most don't give him a chance vs Liddell. I think he may surprise some folks.

His rise to the championship after losing it to AA consists of kicking a can to the head for a KO, going the distance with a fighter that was just destroyed in the first round by Vera, getting a KO win over AA, then grinding out the most boring title defense in the history of UFC. So to recap...1 well placed kick, 1 well placed punch and 2 decision wins that bored me to tears. Regardless of percentages anyone pulls out of their ass....Tim is a vastly overrated fighter and i have a strong suspicion this will be proven when he fights the worlds elite in his weight class.

I said 'fair enough - he beat AA twice.' in my very first post on that thread - that should have been a clue to you that it wasn't vital to your ass-whoopin' Quote: |

If you're suggesting that more than 1/10 US mma fans know Tim is not a bone-fide world champ, perhaps you could hypothesise different figures? I actually thought 1/10 was generous to you but hey, let's call it 5/10 if you like. By my arguement, Tim is still overrated.
I really can't be bothered 'debating' with you, so I bid this thread goodbye
