Default Shogun Wants To Fight Coleman

www.mmaweekly.com

“I Want To Fight Mark Coleman”
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua Talks About His Return

It’s been almost 6 months since the most recent Pride middleweight Grand Prix champion has stepped into the ring, but for Mauricio “Shogun” Rua the wait is almost over. After injuring his arm during a takedown in his last fight in February versus Mark “The Hammer” Coleman, Shogun has been preparing for his eventual return. Shogun spoke with MMAWeekly about his training, recovery and the who and when for his next fight.

“Recovery is coming very well and I’m looking forward to fighting in October,” said Shogun. “I want to fight Mark Coleman and hopefully he’ll accept the fight. The last fight was a mishap and I don’t think it will happen again.”

The awkward landing from Coleman’s takedown broke Rua’s arm which cost him the fight, only the 2nd loss in his professional career and the first since being defeated by Renato “Babalu” Sobral in 2003. After being named Fighter of the Year by MMAWeekly in 2005, Shogun was looking forward to a promising 2006 before the injury. Now despite going up in weight to fight for a 2nd time, Shogun seems focused on only one thing….Mark Coleman.

“I think its going to be Coleman. I hope its going to be Coleman, but its still not for sure. My sights are set on Coleman,” said Rua about the prospects of his next fight.

The takedown from Coleman caused the injury but despite the former NCAA wrestler’s obvious ground skill, Shogun seems unimpressed and will look to land heavy shots early on in their next fight and put all the controversy surrounding their first fight behind him.

“He is a great wrestler, but I’m not too worried about his wrestling. I’m going to do what I always do and I’m going for the knockout. I’m not concerned about his wrestling because I’m going to knock him out,” said Shogun.

With Shogun stating that his next fight will likely be in October, the chances of him being one of the headlining stars on Pride’s debut American show from Las Vegas are pretty good. Coleman has been quoted previously that he wants to fight back in the United States and this rematch along with Pride’s U.S. debut would seem to fit perfectly together.

While the injury has sidelined Shogun these past months, his training regimens have picked back up and he has been training at full strength for the past 3 weeks getting ready for whoever his opponent may just be but listening to him, the rematch with Coleman is definitely the #1 priority on his mind.

I'm pretty sure that this fight will happen at PRIDE 32:The Real Deal. They are both scheduled to fight on the card and Shogun has wanted this fight since he got hurt. I hope this happens, because I'll be there.

Good I hope he comes back and destroys Coleman. I can't stand him or his Hammer House sidekicks. They're all clownshoes. Roided out jokes. That and Shogun is one of the most entertaining, well rounded fighters there are and I love watching him.

Shogun will put Coleman out if Coleman accepts the fight.

I'd be pretty ironic if Coleman won though....but it won't happen.

I can't excited over this fight. Shogun is a complete MMA fighter and Coleman...well, isn't. What I would like to see is a rematch between Shogun and Babalu. That was a great match and any rematch would be historic.

i would love to see a rematch, i never liked coleman, and the way he behaved when shogun went down was embarrasing, no class at all. i hope shogun keeps him up for a while and just mashes his face.

The Coleman bashing thread, no surprise. Coleman is a pioneer of MMA and we owe GNP to him solely.

You really can't make steroid acusations about Coleman and Hammer House with making them about Chute Box as well. Fact is, roids are legal in Pride so most fo the fighters likely use them, it would be a DISSADVANTAGE not to.

That said, there is still no proof that anyone from hammerhouse has ever juiced for a fight, they are all huge yes, however they all live in the gym it is quite apparent backed by the fact that Baroni, member of the HH is actually smaller than he was in UFC and roids are legal in PRIDE so how exactly do you explain that?

I just get sick of hearing all of the roid accusations, it's legal in PRIDE, just assume most of them use them. If roids were not legal, the top ranked fighters would still remain the top ranked fighters however 2 fighters equally macthed in skill, size strength, etc. the fighter juicing is going to win so in PRIDE where they don't test and your carer is on the line in every fight (this is their living, they need to fight to the best of their ability to get a paycheck and the better they fight, the more they make so please do not think there is honor involved and they won't roid and it's a respect thing, no, they are trying to survive) you are going to use every advantage possible.
