| Alves off of UFC 62, Diaz to replace him
Tuesday, August 22, 2006
by Josh Gross (joshg@sherdog.com)
Illness has forced American Top Team welterweight Thiago Alves (Pictures) off Saturday's UFC 62 card. In his stead, UFC veteran Nick Diaz (Pictures) will step in to fight Miletich Fighting System's Josh Neer (Pictures), Sherdog.com has learned.
Jake Shields (Pictures), whom the UFC first approached to replace Alves, confirmed the news to Sherdog.com Monday evening.
Thinking he'd be unable to drop 20 pounds in four days to make the 170-pound welterweight limit, Shields passed on the fight, thus giving his teammate Diaz an opportunity to return to the UFC.
Coming off three consecutive losses in the UFC, Diaz fought once since his last appearance in the Octagon, defeating Ray Steinbeiss by decision in his hometown of Stockton, Calif.
For Alves, a trip to the hospital signaled the beginning of the end for his UFC 62 participation. The Brazilian's last contest came in June, when American Kickboxing Academy's Jon Fitch (Pictures) stopped "Pitbull" with strikes.

Good replacement. Nice to see Diaz back in the UFC. It will be a very tough fight for both fighters. Glad they didn't replace Alves with some no namer.

UFC offered the fight to Jake Shields at first, hopefully that means he'll be making his UFC debut sooner or later.

yeah Jake Shields would be a real nice signing for the UFC. I hope they get him in the Octagon sometime soon also.

this will be a great match up for josh neer..they are a stepping stone for each other..if nick wins it shows he had a run of bad luck and he deserves to be in the top 5 at 170..and vice versa for neer..

Im rooting for Neer. And i really dont think a win here puts Diaz in the top 5 for 170. A 1-3 record in his last 4 UFC bouts isnt exactly a stellar record.

That is a great replacement for Alves. Neer will no doubt bring it, so Diaz better actually show up ready to fight and show some interest in actually finishing Neer rather than leaving it to the judges. Should be a better fight than Alves and Neer though.
