Marcelo Garcia Makes His MMA Against Kim Dae Won

When the rumor that Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza had signed with the UFC started to run rampant, which was later on denied by Souza himself, many fans believed that the alleged signing of Jacare was in direct response to K-1 HERO’S locking up another famed grappler in Marcelinho Garcia. Marcelinho, better wise known as Marcelo, is one of the premier Brazilian Ju-Jitsu specialists in the world. Garcia has taken home the Welterweight Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championship title three times in a row (from 2003, 2005, and 2007) and he has submission victories against many notable fighters including: Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro, Shinya Aoki and Ricco “Suave” Rodriguez. Garcia is best known for being very technical on the ground.


Garcia will make his mixed martial arts debut in a K-1 HERO’S ring this October 28th when he takes on Kim Dae Won. According to Graciemag.com, Garcia will make his debut fighting at 81kg, which is a bit of a change as he normally fights at 70kg. This month’s upcoming K-1 HERO’S event will take place in Seoul, Korea and will feature appearances from Yoshihiro Akiyama, Dong Sik Yoon, Taiei Yin, and Denis Kang.

I wonder why he moved up in weight... maybe he bulked up because of the wrestling & striking involved in MMA. Otherwise i'm not sure why he would put on so much weight.

K-1 Hero's star finds out oppponent and will fight at 81kg

The initial idea and training plan of Jiu-Jitsu star Marcelo Garcia was to stop by Brazil to hone his skills for his K-1 Hero's debut, on the 28th of October. The plans have changed, but his desire has not, and Marcelinho continues to fine tune his technique twice a day in Manhattan, NY, where he lives.


“Marcelinho’s wish was to come to Sao Paulo to have some final training sessions, but he was not able to travel due to visa problems,” commented Fabio Gurgel. “But everything is going fine, and I should go up there shortly before the fight. His opponent is practically confirmed, it’ll be the Korean fighter Kim Dae Won, more experienced, with six fights. It ended up that Marcelinho will debut in the 81kg category, which is not what we wanted, but he will go in wanting it,” the leader of Alliance finished.


Kim Dae Won has a record of three wins and three losses, having been submitted by armbar by Akihiro Gono at Pride Bushido 10, in 2006. His last loss, in April, was at Deep to Joe Doerksen, who was knocked out by Paulao Filho in the decision match for the WEC 185 pound belt, in August.

I thought it was interesting that he's going to be fighting the 81kg division, as he normally fights in the 70kg weight class.


For those of you not up-to-date on your conversion tables, that's about a 25 pound difference.

I'm getting a little nervous now... Marcelo has beaten much larger opponents in ADCC, but fighting a veteran that's got him by 20+ lbs makes me nervous.

You think Marcelo will gain all that weight? Or just come in under the limit?

He better not gain all that weight. Not if he's used to fighting around 70kg. If I remember right, I don't think he ever cuts much weight, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him come into this fight at 72-74 kg.

Yeah, I figured he'd come under the limity too. And now that I know he got sub'd by Gono & Doerksen i'm not as nervous. The only thing that worries me is how Garcia is going to take punches (if he gets hit)... his face just looks like one of those little Furbee dolls, little kid like. I got Marcelo by RNC in the 1st Round.

I was wondering the same thing.

Seeing he has moved to NY and has also been going over to team Quest for training, hopefully he will be up to par in the MMA relm and make the transition fast.

I certainly want him to. I would just love to see him whoop ass on some top elite WW MMA guys.

I also hope the extra baggage doesnt hurt him. But have you noticed how big his thighs got??? Wow try to move that guy I tell you.

too bad his wrestlings not that good. it would help the transition, but time with TQ should work that out.
