| UFC Requests SuperBowl Weekend Date in Las Vegas Quote:
Zuffa LLC, the UFC’s parent company, has officially reserved a Feb. 2 fight date for a SuperBowl weekend card in Las Vegas, MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned.
UFC officials have requested the date with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the local regulatory body. The event is expected to take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Over the weekend, a source close to the venue told MMAjunkie.com that the UFC has already begun prep work for the event. The organization traditionally holds major pay-per-view events the same week as the National Football League’s SuperBowl show. It’ll be the UFC’s fourth consecutive year in which the February tradition has been held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
While the Feb. 2 date has been requested, the NSAC has yet to approve it, states the commission’s website. However, based on the organization’s history, the UFC’s request is unlikely to be turned down.
As MMAjunkie.com has reported over the past month, UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture will likely headline the event. The 44-year-old champion last defended his title against Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 74 in August, but he suffered a broken ulna bone (the smaller of the two forearm bones) while checking a kick in the first round and doesn’t expect to fight again until 2008.
The Mandalay Bay Events Center holds approximately 12,000 spectators, and the UFC could move the event to the larger MGM Grand Arena (capacity: 17,000) if the organization expects larger-than-usual ticket sales, said our source. However, the last time the UFC held an event at the MGM (UFC 71 in May), fewer than 15,000 tickets were sold. The same thing happened at UFC 66 in December 2006, when fewer than 14,000 tickets were sold. | link http://mmajunkie.com/2007/10/07/ufc-...-in-las-vegas/

I seriously wish the UFC would have Randy defend in Columbus, OH in march again. C'mon Dana we gave you the attendence record last year and it'll be the same again this year. Over 5,000 at the weigh ins.

Clever. | Too bad they took them off their website right after Vick was indicted.

The UFC would make for a pretty awsome half-time show.

Am i the only person that thinks this is a terrible idea? a large majority of people that might otherwise tickets to this are going to be possibly taking the superbowl in.
The UFC is nowhere near big enough to compete for this. I mean it's not even close. Superbowl weekend is a week long event, and has at least 1000 times more viewer audience.
I guess it could work, but to me it just sounds like a really poor idea.
I could totally be talking out of my ass here since I have no idea what the PPV turnouts were previously. but just off the cuff it sounds bad.
FYI I'm referreing to PPV buys. which mean a ton more than ticket sales
