Most great sports memories I have were accompanied by a great call (meaning a great announcing job with some timeless/memorable lines). In fact the call is probably at least 25% of the intensity when I recall particularly powerful sports memories.
Talking to a few buddies here, they are the same - the call is a surprisingly big part of what they like/remember about a sports moment.
MMA has had some great calls. Do you also put a value on a good classic call? And if so, name some of your favorites.
Here are a few off the top of my head, in no particular order:
"Oh....Gomi, is he really hurt or is he just playing possum here?" - "Taking shots on the chin!!" - Gomi-Diaz (in fact just about Barnett's entire call of this fight was money)
"Rich Franklin's in trouble! Rich is in trouble! Rich is in big trouble!" - variations of which were said about 10 times simultaneously by Randy, Goldy and Rogan during the closing seconds of Franklin-Silva I.
"It is all over!" - Goldy. This has become so common it's become devalued, but in some of the early fights this still gives me goosebumps when he nails the timing.
"Forrest has got his back, both hooks in, he's flattening him out!" - screamed by Rogan at UFC 76 as Forrest was about to choke out Shogun.
"It's over, it's over, it's over" - "KEVIN RANDLEMAN HAS KNOCKED OUT MIRKO CRO COP! THE MONSTER HAS KNOCKED OUT MIRKO CRO COP! KEVIN RANDLEMAN HAS KNOCKED OUT MIRKO CRO COP!" - Total Elimination 2004
"Here we go!!!" - Goldy during Hughes-Trigg II when Matt ran across the cage with Trigg.
"What a kick!" - "Oh my GOD, TO THE HEAD!" - Quadros and Bas respectively, during some PRIDE fight, I wish I could remember which one; if someone knows help me out. I don't think it was Cro Cop; it was someone else, I think.
"Good LORD!", "He's hurt him three times in the last 60 seconds!", "Once he had him hurt, he stayed on him!" - Randy with a classic call during Serra's beatdown of GSP.
Most of the last 90 seconds of round 2 in Hughes-Penn II - "90 seconds remains in round 2!!", "Can Penn finish it here? Can he finish Matt Hughes? Can Matt Hughes survive? 20 seconds remains in round 2!!" "He's got a triangle and he's got an armbar!" - "He's trying to isolate the arm now", "WHAT A FIGHT!!" ... Goldy, Randy and Rogan combined again to make this one of the greatest calls of all time.
The first 30 seconds of Randy-Sylvia at UFC 68, when I thought Rogan was going to explode..."THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE! HE'S GOT HIS BACK! BOTH HOOKS IN!"
Man, it gives me goosebumps just thinking back to these times as I type these
