Don't worry about the highschool crap. Another thing thats great about wrestling is it doesn't matter what " click" you're in. Everyone's equal on the mat. When I started wrstling in early middleschool I was a white kid into hip hop. Back then, that wasn't cool and made you an outsider. But when I was wrestling I didn't feel any of that. Becoming good helped of course, but I have to tell you, typically the best wrestlers on the team have developed a bit of maturity which is part of what helped them excel. These guys will help a new guy who's dedicated. And in reference to Duran's post ablout wrestling helping me achieve success in my career now, he is absolutely right. In highschool there were two sports that everyone knew where in the best shape and the hardest workers, wrestling and swimming. You want to see want you're made of, wrestle. You'll know within 3 weeks. The cardio for wrestling is virtually exact to what you need as an MMA athlete. But most of all. LOVE IT or don't bother with it.

not just for things like upper body, you will learn all your basic wrestling, take downs, reversials, stuff that really helps in mma

i didnt really have a style at the time, i had a good stand up game a good wrestling game and defense but lacked the submissions and ground and pound knowledge to really succeed in mma not that i couldnt have learned but i descided to go down a different path

ive got good stand up, a lil wrestling (more BJJ than anything else) so i know some submissions, ive got pretty good takedown defense but depending on who i am up against i might let them take me down and get them in my guard, becuz as i said earlier thats where i am most comfortable. i am not worried about cardio, ive got that down easy (becuz of track and Xcountry). i just need to work a lil more on my stand up, being on top (mostly ground and pound) and a lil more on my defense.

you also might consider an away from school activity along with srestling i dont know if the ymca still has boxing or not but that would be another option or take some kick boxing classes, cross training is the key to getting away from being one or two dimensional
