| GSP/Hughes 3 like BJ/Jens 2?
With GSP on a serious upswing, especially in mental attitude, I fully expect him to dominate against Matt. But will it be a one-sided affair like NJ rolling over Jens Pulver? I would not be surprised.

GSP has had one victory since losing to Serra. It was a very good victory, but still only one win. I wouldn't call that a 'serious upswing.'
The oddsmakers seem to agree with you though. GSP is a pretty generous favorite. Hughes isn't being given very good odds, which I personally find kind of surprising.
I expect to see GSP win, but I give Hughes more credit than to say he's going to be streamrolled. More than anything else, I'm just hoping for a good fight, worthy of main event status.

Your analogy works better for their second fight. I don't think the third match up will be as one sided as the second. GSP surprised Hughes with the inside leg kick and his takedown defense. Hughes won't be surprised this time. It doesn't mean that he can do anything about it but at least he won't be surprised and can gameplan better.

Agree with the above. I want first and foremost to see a great fight; and only secondly to see a particular fighter win (in this case Hughes).
Agree also that while the result of the fight (win/loss) may in fact be the same as fight # 2, the path to that result is unlikely to be as one-sided.
That was basically the worst fight Hughes has fought in several years, and I wouldn't necessarily assume that it was going to play out similarly on 12/29.

Agreed. GSP/Hughes 2 was more like Penn/Pulver 2.
GSP/Hughes 3 will be how I imagine most rubber matches. Two very well-prepared athletes who know their opponent well and are aware that there are likely no more secrets to be found in each other's games. It's going to be a competitive fight, and either way will end up being a statement for the remainder of Hughes' career.
A statement as to whether time is catching up to him, or if he's still got it. Either way, I'll be watching.

nah,i think this fight will be alot different than the last one.i dont think hughes will make the same mistake twice.i think the last loss was good for hughes.
because i think he got settled in,and didnt really pay much attention to who he was fighting.because i think he really did underestimate gsp last time out.this time he wont do that.

i dont think u can compare BJ Jens 2 to GSP Hughes because jens at least mounted some offense and lasted with BJ, in hughes gsp 2 i dont think hughes even mounted an offense. Other than some lazy bear hugs and shots. I know GSP will come in mentally prepared because he steam-rolled hughes before, but will he be physically prepared is the question. Im the biggest GSP fan there is but if you hear his recent interviews weve all heard this before. "I am in top shape, i am ready to go" just like before the Serra fight, however, after the serra fight he said he only ran a 2 week camp
Let me give GSP the benefit of the doubt, even if he wasnt prepared and just said that so Serra didn't know that he was undertrained, he should have sucked it up post fight and not said "i only trained 2 week"s, mind u serras telling renzo not to deal with GSP anymore was similar to my baby cuzin telling my sister not to talk to me when i wedgied him.
Interesting thread though, The mental upswing im not sure about, i dont know GSP's mental game, if GSP gets through hughes, well see how storng he is mentally when he faces Matt Serra again, a guy whos already in his head.
on that note WAR GSP

I believe that GSP has matts number, I mean that last fight with them showed resemblance to Franklin-Silva as far as domination goes. GSP TKO round 1. I still really want to see Matt vs Matt though.

well since GSP/Hughes 2 was a washout just like BJ/Jens 2, i dont see why GSP wouldn't knock Matt's ass out just as easily
yeah Matt had a bad gameplan. thats cool.
GSP just defended takedowns from the best wrestler in the division, and even though he lost to Serra, nothing that Serra brought to the fight is a danger from Hughes.
Hughes doesnt have a dangerous guard or heavy hands. which are the things you need to beat GSP, since he's a talented wrestler with an excellent sprawl, with way more standup than Hughes
