A hammerfist debate Am I the only one that thinks hammerfists oftentimes come off as a "sissy" way to hit someone? They make a fighter look like he doesn't know how to punch. Now I know they may sometimes be the only way to get some strikes in on an opponent because of the way he may be defending but ,still, don't they look a bit on the sissy side? Wouldn't a hook to the side of the head be a lot better and do more damage? |
i think that hammerfists are the easiest punches to use while on the ground. hooks would be hard to use due to no leverage from the legs and no use of the body to punch properly. hammerfists are also the easiest way to score points i guess. |
I don't see how any legal blow can be "sissy" I no expert but hammerfist looks like a best way to aggravate a mouse and score some easy points while at it |
When a guy is covered up, hammer fists are the best because you can't get the rotational speed that you need for a hook while fighting on the ground (although you can much better for an elbow). |
Also i believe hammerfists are good for setting up larger strikes or sub attempts. While they wont knock someone out they do force the opponent to use their hands to block their face. This can open a chance for a strong hook the side of the head or to drop some elbows. You can hear Matt Serra screaming for hammerfists when he's cornering on TUF 4. "hammerfist, hammerfist, elbow!!" |

Hammer fists are great ,b/c they're short and effective and can cause cuts.Looping hooks to the head throw off your balance and make you very susceptible to sweeps and sometimes submissions. It's not sissy at all.How is smashing some dudes face in sissy? |
hammerfists Now I'm not saying that they're flat out sissy, just that they sometimes come off looking that way. Maurice Smith before his fight with Mark Coleman said Coleman hits like a girl and he did a hammerfist motion with his hands. I guess that's just stuck in my head since then. I still think there are alot more ways to strike an opponent on the ground than with hammerfists. I will however admit that they do score points and do help in creating openings. Yeah, they do have their benefits, but they still look kind of funny to me. |
