Should have been a drw and Newton should have retained his title.. I could see this topic being more meaningful if they didnt rematch, but as we all know they did and are questions were answered.

Basicly you have to look at it from Matt's point of view....Wouldnt you pick up and slam him? but when he lifted up Carlos, Carlos grabbed the fence, Matt knowing he was allmost to the point to pass out, he dropped him like he planned....with mad force....if he passed out befor the slam wouldnt have knock Carlos out, just by a 5ft drop........but WHo woke up first? Theres your winner!

Matt's brain?
You write your opinion as if they are true.
Here's another perspective.
Matt picks him up but puts him against the fence. Why? BC Newton got him in choke and Matt is trying to get out of it using the fence. Why? Because there is a good chance slam may not be enough to get him off and he may be in deeper shit.
You're not matt and you dont know what he was thinking. But the looks of it sure seems like Matt fell down to me.

Would anyone have really felt better seeing Newton get the win because Hughes was choked out a split second earlier than the slam? Newton obviously got the bad end of that deal. It was definitely a situation never foreseen by the people who write the rules.

The ending tp the fight doesn't matter ,b/c they had a rematch and Hughes won.A fight is a fight and regardless of whether or not Hughes was out he was first to get up and in a real fight the man who walks away is the man who won and Hughes walked away.

I think Hughes was out first, no question. However to get the power on that slam he had to initiate it before passing out.... Like a previous post on here said it wouldn't have had that much force if it was just from Hughes passing out... I think he was out of it, but about half way through the slam.

Ahh, Prophet you just happened to bring up a fight that I replayed I don't know how many times in order to decide what I think happened. It's been awhile but this is my opinion on the matter.
I don't think Big John could've called it any other way. Hughes did not tap and there is no way John could have seen that he was out (if he was).
When Matt picked up Newton to slam him, Newton threw his arm up over the top of the cage preventing Matt from slamming him. Not allowed, but happens all the time.
Big John made Newton drop his arm and then there was a pause that seemed to go on forever with Newton propped up against the fence.
Now comes the part I watched over and over to see if Matt crumpled. It looked to me like Matt took a controlled step or two back, bent his knees and slammed Newton.
Next Newton is clearly out cold, Matt untangles himself with no delay and sits up.
Matt was acting confused and he didn't realize he had won till someone told him (don't remember if it was John or someone yelling outside the cage.) The part I'm not sure about is if Hughes was momentarily out when he slammed Newton, or if he just got his head rattled.
Being confused (as if he may have been knocked out) does not equal being knocked out, not being able to defend himself, or tapping out.
IMHO, Hughes deserved the win.
