| Carlos Newton vs. Matt Hughes at UFC 34
In another thread there was a discussion on the Newton/Hughes fight. Basically, Hughes got put in a triangle choke, picked up Newton and propped him up against the cage, and waited. Well, it is pretty clear that Hughes passed out and when he fell, the slam/unintentional headbutt knocked Newton out cold. Now...John McCarthy was behind Hughes and did not see him pass out, he only saw the slam and that Newton was out cold and that Hughes was awake.
My question to you all is...who is at fault? Is it McCarthy's fault for not seeing or noticing Hughes go out? Should the UFC have some sort of instant replay to correct bad ref errors?
An interesting note is that Newton did not have a spectacular career after this fight, going 3 and 5. His last fight was in October of 2004, a loss to Ryo Chonan.

Yep I remember Matt waking up and being shocked that he just won. Then he jumped over the cage to go to the announce table where Jens Pulver was sitting in on guest play-by-play.

I honestly think no one should is at fault here. The situation was so damn awkward (a guy in a triangle choke picking his opponent up and putting him on TOP the cage to powerbomb him) that there really is no precedent. I mean Big John had NOWHERE to go to get a better look, unless he hurdled the cage and I think Big John is passed his prime (although Babalu might disagree). But yeah it was one of those things where you just have to be like "well, that was fuckin goofy" and move on.

They gave Newton an immediate title match, and Hughes beat his ass so it didn't end up being that big of a deal.

No ones really at fault but Newton should of won and probably would of if the Ref had saw what happened.

I think they were both out at the same time, Hughes was still coherent when he started the slam and i think he went out just about the same time as Newton or a split second before newton while slamming him. I guess first guy to wake up wins. Overall a weird sitiuation.

For some stupid ass reason he was keeping Newton pinned against the cage. If you look at the fall, it doesn't look like a controlled fall. Also, if you look at Hughes reaction afterward, he had no idea he had won. If he had done the slam earlier, then we would have seen a good fight.

i saw that fight, it was a good fight. i say make history and declare the fight a double tko submission and tko. that will be awesome. just like in street fighter the game, you can go for a double ko. that would be just insane. |

If he just passed out he would have crumpled and his legs would have just went out. He backed up and slammed down from the waist before going out. Crazy ass timing that Hughes went limp mid slam but he def started the slam prior to being choked out.
