Gomi could definitely hang in the UFC's 155 lb division, but he knows good and well that he wouldn't be champion there as long as BJ is on top.

Not to mention many LWs are great on the ground to.
IMO Gomi isn't #1 and he might not be #2 or 3 either. No way he beats Sherk and I'm not convinced he can beat Franca (On steriods or not)

the primary crop of elite 155ers are in Japan still.
JZ, Aoki, Kawajiri, Ishida, Melendez. just the ones that were attached to the Yarrenoka show. | I agree, except that I still wouldn't put Sherk in as elite. He's borderline top 10, at best. Quote:

That a bunch of top 20 guys are much too frightening for him. Suuuure....
If I were him, I would leap at the opportunity sign the most rigidly-binding, hyper-exclusive contract in the industry when currently, that company can offer him exactly 1 [one] fight with a top 5 LW.
I'd gladly leave Japan, where I'm deeply respected and honored; to fight in a country where drunken rednecks boo every time a fight hits the ground; or whine about at any judges decision they are too inept and clueless to understand.
Or course I'd want to leave a company working with people I've known for years, people that I trust; and fight for an organization run by a company president who disrespects gifted fighters, Asians, and basically anything he can't control. The UFC HW champion leaves in a veritable hissyfit of bad press? Oh, c'mon, that's not a big deal...I'm sure they respect all the other fighters in the UFC. Right?
Yeah, Gomi is an idiot, and he's clearly afraid of the gargantuan wealth of talent the UFC has currently stockpiled at LW.
or not. Quote:

You can call them "rednecks" if you want to, or "hooligans" in England or Ireland, but they ALL ACT the SAME.
To get back on topic, Gomi is good, great even, but he's not top 3 IMO and would get handled by Sherk, Penn, and a few others at 155.

I definitely don't think he's #1 and the fact that he wants to go elsewhere to fight is good and all. but the boom is far from over. I think ufc 81 was one of the best cards i've seen. everyone i watched it with was cheering and screaming just as the fans were (except the first few rows of businessman and delegates), even the preliminaries were amazing.

The MMA boom is over?!?! lol Under what rock on what planet has he been living on lately? MMA continues to go uphill constantly. I really like Gomi as a fighter but not sure what exactly he means by that statement.

Can anyone actually quantify if MMA is still booming, plateau-ing, or decreasing in popularity? I mean, haha, I think we all may be a little biased on the popularity of MMA.

The other places you've mentioned are all places the UFC hosts fights...but not in Japan.
You're welcome to your opinion, but I've never seen anything in Sherk's fights that would indicate he's close to Gomi's level, let alone the "few other's" you've mentioned.
Who else would you put at top 3, if not Gomi? Quote:

As far as popularity, I was deeply disturbed that the UFC felt it needed to get the WWE to co-sponser UFC 81. I don't know if that indicates a tapering off of their profit margin, but it was disappointing; to me, anyway.
