Default Tim Boetsch Plans to Stay with UFC

UFC newcomer Tim Boetsch (7-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who earned an exciting TKO victory over fellow light heavyweight David Heath (7-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC) in his debut at this past weekend’s UFC 81 event, thinks he may have found a new home with the organization.

The UFC’s newest light heavyweight, who took the UFC 81 fight on just 10 days’ notice, discussed that debut fight and his plans for the future on Wednesday’s episode of TAGG Radio (TAGG Radio Network - Home of TAGG Radio & The Lights Out Show!), a partner site of MMAjunkie.com (UFC News & Rumors - MMA News - UFC Fighters - UFC Event Recaps and Previews - MMAjunkie.com).

“I knew when (Heath) didn’t put his hands out to catch himself (falling) he was in trouble,” Boetsch said of the fight. “His head bounced off the floor, and I knew he was hurt pretty bad. I dropped in and started hitting him, and I knew nobody was home at that point.“

And though it was a vicious throw that lead to the end of the fight, it was Boetsch’s front kicks that proved pivotal in the flow of the fight.

“A lot of people use their lead leg front kick as a defensive tool to keep distance and what not,” Boetsch said. “I actually throw a rear leg front kick, which is more of an offensive, more powerful kick. He didn’t really have an answer for it. I didn’t expect to use it that much. But he couldn’t seem to do anything with it, so I kept throwing it.“

Boetsch said his fight was considered for both the KO of the Night, as well as Fight of the Night honors, either of which would have brought him and additional $60,000 in pay.

“That would have definitely been the icing on the cake, for sure, but I was just glad to get in there, handle my business and come out of there with the win,” Boetsch said.

Boetsch, though, did indicate he got additional pay on top of his normal salary, confirming the UFC “takes care of you if you put on an exciting fight.“

Boetsch, who took the fight as a late replacement for an injured Tomasz Drwal (14-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC), was a mostly unknown commodity to fans coming into his fight. Boetsch described himself as “self-trained, self-motivated.“

“I have my own gym here,” Boetsch said. “We’re called Team Triple Threat. That’s basically where I do most of my training… We just get after it out here in Sunbury, Penn.“

And although Boetsch has not yet heard from the UFC regarding future plans, he feels confident another appearance is on the horizon.

“I haven’t heard anything as of yet,” Boetsch said. “But just from the response from the fans and everybody that saw it, I think they’re going to have a hard time not bringing me back. So I’m looking forward to getting back in there for them, hopefully in the near future, and putting on another good show.“

Good to see him sticking around. He doesn't look like much when you first lay eyes on him...I was like "Whoa, when did Larry the Cable Guy get into MMA?"...but the dude can throw, in both the literal figurative sense.

Wonder if he'll end up being anything more than a gatekeeper.

I'm down with that. I too looked at Boetsch's appearance and figured he was gonna get worked. His front leg kicks were sick. Curious to see how his next fight will fair. Plus I gotta give some love for a fellow Pennsylvanian.

Props to Boetsch for coming in on 10 days notice and flopping David Heath on his face. I laughed my ass of when I saw that shit. I'll be interested to see how he does in the UFC when he has the proper amount of time to prepare for his opponent.
