Still, I don't know if I want the sub system to be like the WWE system... I like it the way it is in Pride FC (and to a certain extent, UFC: Sudden Impact) where it's all about timing.
In those games, if I wanted to submit you I'd input the command for the submission and you would have a limited amount of time to counter it (using one button to counter upper body subs and another for lower body). If you miss this counter you then have a set amount of time (which is dependant on the difference between the fighters' submission skills, their weight and fatigue) to mash the buttons to at least try to survive. Countering the move quickly will lead to a reversal and mashing out of it will result in the attacker gaining position. Failure to get out will result in submission. This essentially means that you can potentially win the fight with the first sub (if you're good and your opponent's fairly green) but it's just slightly more likely than winning with the first punch (which I have done ). This I find more realistic than the WWE style which more fits the pro-wrestling style of long, arduous struggling in one hold that is essentially locked in.
Granted the game has it's flaws; stiff takedowns and no option to add a takedown to a combo, bad physics, submissions having the wrong names (the Heel-hook from the guard-mount in the game is an obvious Leg-lace) and no ref to call a TKO (which I hope they add in the new game!). Still, it's worth checking out as a piece of MMA history!

In that Liddell/Rampage trailer, it looked a lot like a souped-up Fight Night Round 3 gaming engine. It'll be interesting to see how they work the ground game controls; I imagine there'll be a lot of thumbstick-twirling.

I hope this title is going to be good but I seriously have my doubts. The first game for a next gen console usually are bad. Case in point:Madden 06. I think if it becomes an annual title as stated before, it could grow into something huge. I just think there are going to be so many button combo's to learn that it is going to be more like studying for a test than playing a video game. I am so geeked for this game and I have seen 3Q release dates on several web sites so I think the majority of the game is complete. Lets hope THQ can come through and nail it.

LOL, I hope THQ sticks to the TRUE UFC... Like If you fail to sign a contract extension, Dana White puts you on the prelims fighting Brad Imes. I also hope you can choose to walk out on your current contract because Dana wont copromote... That would be hilarious. Man I can go on.

I havn't played any mma games since the craptastic ps2 one. As long as they have a good sub system though, with a mode to control the sticks and move them around to apply a sub corrrectly, and maybe a timing system included also, than I'll be happy. If the gameplay is anything like the trailer when rampage pounds out chuck, realistic as hell, than it may be a must have.

What EA sports did for boxing fans, creating somewhat fun exciting accurate FIGHT NIGHT games... I hope THQ could do for this game.
There are 2 types of games... realistic... and non-realistic
IT BETTER BE REAL... and accurate... or else... wwe games SUCK! tap A button really fast...LoL...
I'LL SKIP WWE GAMES
I'LL BUY EA FIGHT NIGHT GAMES

That means odds are the game won't be out until prob 09.
The game is either going to be shit or be bad ass.
Seeing that they are taking their sweet ass time with the game, actually makes me think they are making it bad ass.
They should honestly just copy the type of format that Fight Night uses with you have to build your skills. If not its going to suck.
An the moves should be done like WWE Smackdown vs Raw.
Should be a mix of WWE, Fight Night, Some new shit, some of the old UFC/Pride games.
This game has to flow, it can't be slow paced or it will suck. Their needs to be flash ko's an shit like that.
I thought the other MMA games were trash.
An the people who want this just like MMA, that would suck. If this game was spot on it would be trash.
Once you got good you could end all the fights in under a minute.

THQ to Reveal UFC Video Game at UFC 84
Posted by MMA Junkie on February 11, 2008 at 11:14 am ET
THQ, the video game developer that won a contract to develop the Ultimate Fighting Championships’ new video game, has planned its first reveal of the game for UFC 84 — an event that takes place Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 24.
The news comes from THQ’s recent financial/stockholder conference call.
More than a year ago, MMAjunkie.com (UFC News & Rumors - MMA News - UFC Fighters - UFC Event Recaps and Previews - MMAjunkie.com) passed along the news that THQ had signed a five-year contract with the UFC. The famed game maker earned exclusive rights to publish UFC video games through the end of 2011 for all console and portable platforms, as well as wireless devices.
According to company executives, they’ll reveal their work to date at UFC 84, which features a main event of UFC lightweight champ B.J. Penn vs. former champ Sean Sherk. The event takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. The company is also expected to reveal the game at its own media event that same weekend.
A release date for the game will likely be announced during the UFC 84 unveiling, as will an official name for the game. The title has been referred to as both “UFC 2009” and “Ultimate Fighting Championship 2009” over the past year.
THQ plans to make the upcoming title an annual release (similar to the successful Madden football line of games), assuring the game and its roster of fighters stay fresh. The first version of the game is expected to feature current and past UFC champions and other notable fighters. For much of the past year, many UFC fighters — including newbies from “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series — have been scheduled for appointments with THQ to be modeled into game characters.
THQ, founded in 1989, has exclusive deals with companies such as World Wrestling Entertainment, Nickelodeon and Disney Pixar. The company has produced approximately 200 game titles to date.
