The EliteXC deal was the #1 story on PTI (ESPN's biggest talking head show), beating out Clemens and everybody else. Kornheiser and Wilbon spent the whole 2 minutes calling MMA savage. Apparently they have gone away from their previously somewhat openminded views and have decided that its pure savagery and not really a sport.

One offshoot of the EliteXC deal is that people like this are going to start up with the savagery claims again. I've already heard this claim from other sports people recently, and its surely going to get some mainstream press about savagery from things like parents organizations now that its on the networks. Should be interesting.

Somebody should draft up an email protesting to the PTI people and send post it so we can spam it to them (email is pti@espn.com). They do occaisionally respond to viewers.

Yeah I tend to just ignore ignorant people like this who do not bother researching something and simply shoot off at the mouth about something they clearly know jack shit about.

Well, the problem is that most of the older sports fans share opinions like this regardless of what the facts are. When you start to add them up, thats a big chunk of your potential fanbase and a big voice that could force somebody like CBS to do things that would hurt MMA. Its one thing to ignore a few people who are ignorant, its another to have to swim upstream against entire demographics that are strongly against you.

I think it is fair to call it savage, as long as you are willing to call boxing, auto racing, hockey, football and rugby savage.

I don't watch this show enough to know what their thoughts are on the other sports.

They said in response to boxing that boxing can sometimes be savage, but MMA tries and is always savage. A rather stupid point I thought, but they both made that exact argument and I've heard a lot of other sports people repeat it.

Well I would rather have my arm bent or get put to sleep as opposed to getting hit in the head three hundred times in 36 minutes. I find the latter to be more savage. So: Fuck them.

For some reason many people consider strikes on the ground to be tremendously savage. Thats what they all mention: "THEY CAN HIT THEM WHEN THEY ARE DOWN, THATS SO BRUTAL". But if you are both standing up, its a Sweet Science.

Like I said before, you cant say "fuck them" to entire demographics. MMA cant hit the mainstream with ESPN and everybody over 35 against them. Like it or not Kornheiser and Wilbon pretty closely reflect the views of the (older) sports community in most cases.

This is why EXC has to make their show a little less sleazy and try to show how much safety is a top concern.
