i always thought McCarthy was a fair ref i dont think he has any bais and even if he does if your going to win or winning in a MMA fight it dosent matter about the ref, very rearly are there bad decisions ill admit there have been some real stinkers but u could just put that down to human error i have never really seen McCarthy make a mistake, Heb has made a few mistakes but still on the whole he is a good ref its just all the pro shamrock people got pissed which just made the hate on him seem worse

Big John is without a doubt the best referee in MMA.
He is so experienced and knows the fighters so well, he knows when a fighter has had enough, and he knows certain fighters can take more punishment, and that some fighters, while taking punishment, are still trying to improve position.

Guys you gotta admit that whether you saw the Tito/Shamrock II fight or not, the screams over it being stopped too quickly were everywhere. Hell even Randy C. slipped up and said, "I'm not sure why he stopped the fight."
The guy just incorrectly assumed that John was the ref.
Bboyphl, I think you just found out what will get you blasted faster than anything on this forum. Not doing your homework.

The only guy that Big John is biased against is David "Tank" Abbott.
But then again, Tank has a lot of people who don't like him.

I noticed in Big John and the main event matches he will always give the fighters the benefit of the doubt before he stops. He did it with Royce, Babalu, and now penn. He wont immediatly jump in like some refs will do, he lets them have a chance to fight back, but still stops the fight before anything serious can happen. John is by far the best referee today.

Ok let me apologize for not doing some research. I just got done watching the Matt/Bj fight and it was on my mind. And there was no reason to call me an idiot for anythin I typed. Because I can assure you I am not. And to say my argument is ridiculous is ridiculous. But I appreciate everyones input and I love reading what people have to say. But instead of insulting me you should have just corrected me.

I believe that he keeps the fight going for a longer period because he wants to give a certain fighter more of a chance. Like in Chuck's first fight against Randy. He let Chuck get pummeled for quite a while probably hoping he'd stand up. And I'm not discrediting John in anyway because I think he's a solid ref. |
I think you may be looking at it from the wrong angle here. He is giving these guys a chance because of the implications of the fight. He seems to let guys in title fights go on longer. Guys like BJ Penn are highly experianced and he wants to give them that chance to improve their position. I like the fact that he lets it go on longer because I've seen guys get out of positions as bad as the one BJ was in.
In my own opinion, i'd like to see Big John ref every title fight because of the fact he won't stop em early.
