Is it just me or does he seem to favor a certain figher in every bout? I don't want to go ranting about a bunch of examples but I'll name a couple.
It seems that he favors Tito Ortiz. In his fights with Ken Shamrock it seems like
John wants Shamrock to get his ass kicked. I mean in the first fight it looked like Ken was gonna die if it went any longer. And in the second he just stopped it without Ken taking much damage.
Chuck Liddell also. If you watch when Chuck first gets in the ring, John goes over and talks to him. They seem all friendly and I think it makes him biased. An example being Chuck vs. Randy I. Randy was beating the hell out of Chuck when he finally kept him down and John just kept letting the fight go until he finally stopped it.
Bj Penn. If you looked at the beginning when he first got in the ring John was talking to him and giving him advice. I know he also told Matt to watch his opponent to but he said it to Bj in a more convincing way. And Matt could have seriously hurt Bj if John were to let it continue. I don't know why he allowed the fight to go on that long when Bj was unitelligently defending himself.
I just want to know what you guys think about this. Is he biased and does he favor fighters?? This is my first thread and I hope it's a good one. And I don't see the need for any attack from anyone because I keep an open mind so if there is someone who can come up with a reason why I'm wrong I will glady listen.
I've never seen anybody complain about John's stoppages.
He didn't even referee the second Ken/Tito fight, and I'm suprised you didn't know that since every thread after that fight was practically a Herb Dean threat.
And no offense but you don't really make sense....John is biased towards Chuck and therefore lets him get his ass handed to him in the final minute of the first Couture fight?
Herb Dean was the ref who stopped Shamrock/Ortiz II. Anyhow, welcome to the board. I think McCarthy is just fine, I haven't noticed anything major in his actions really.
Big John talks to both fighters before the fight and basically tells them that they already discussed the rules how it works, makes sure they have the safety equipment (Cup, mouthpeice), and makes sure they are ready to fight. We don't always see him talk to both but he does.
Oh Herb Dean ref'd the second one. I didn't know because I didn't watch it. but thank you all for your opinions and I can kinda change my view but not completly. I believe that he keeps the fight going for a longer period because he wants to give a certain fighter more of a chance. Like in Chuck's first fight against Randy. He let Chuck get pummeled for quite a while probably hoping he'd stand up. And I'm not discrediting John in anyway because I think he's a solid ref.
First off welcome to the forum bboyphl. You may be interested in listening to Big John's interview on CFZ radio. CFZ radio is listed as one of the forums and in there is some of the archived interviews. I think it's a terrific interview and it answers some questions I've had about some of Big John's decisions.
If I remember correctly, I think Randy Couture is a friend of Johns.
My personal opinion is that John is a fair ref. He's human so he probably does like some fighters more than others, but I think he is a professional and does his best to be impartial.
title fights always go a little longer than regular fights (unless a fighter just stops moving or turns his back or something a long those lines). If you still want to try and make a point, try to find a fight thats not a title fight.
