That's why he lost.BJ's the kind of guy that even when he gases ,he still fights hard.It was the injury. Now this all makes sense.

I'm sorry but you must not know how ridiculously painful a rib injury like that is. No amount of heart or adrenaline could make you move like normal through an inury like that. It is amazing that he came out for the next round if he had that kind of injury. When you sustain a rib injury like that you can hardly breathe let alone defend take downs and throw punches. This makes much more sense to me. I think even Joe Rogan said that he had never seen a fighter gas like that before. To go from having so much in the tank to absolutely nothing.

I think it was a combo of gassing and pain, and think he should have trained better still, Look at his body he was flabby, sparring for 5 rounds is not as taxing as really having to exert yourself and leaving it all in the ring to win. | yeah fighters fight through pain all the time...but you know how hard that is when you injure your ribs? Kalib had to verbally tap to Kendall cuz of it...he could barely breath, it was that bad. same with BJ! he wasn't gassing at all until the end of the second rd, then nothing. and you say his body looked flabby? he has never been a cut/ripped guy. give some credit where credit is due! BJ has loads of heart! can't wait til he comes back!!!

I remember standing up out of the corner in pain. But I was thinking, "Earn your title this is what you have to do to get your belt back, fight through the pain". I knew the oppurtunity I had with getting this fight, especially after losing my last fight. I wasn't going to quit on the corner. I kept going because I honestly believed it was destiny. When me and Matt were boxing I felt like I couldn't breathe and had no mobility in my core. But I kept thinking something good is going to happen. When Matt started dominating the stand up I tried for a takedown. I had nothing and pulled to guard. I felt like I couldn't do anything on the ground. But I was still positive. Matt hit me in the ribs from half guard. The pain was so excruciating I had to use my far hand to block it. I would rather Matt pass my guard and punch my face the hit my ribs. When Matt was in his favorite position that he likes. I was still thinking I was going to win somehow. Big John gave me plenty of time. I practiced defending against that position with flexibility, but I had none with my core. Even when Big John stopped the fight, I was still so positive I thought I escaped. Congratulations to Matt, he is a great fighter. It's not his fault that that happened, he fought like the champion he is. He deserved the victory. | This does make a lot of sense as the poster attested, but I want to point out the very last sentance, if BJ Penn can give Matt credit for the win, they why can't everyone here?
Later.

Later. | he deserves credit! but doesnt mean we should ignore what really happened!
it wasnt until Penn got injured that Hughes startin beatin him, Penn wasnt at 100% in the 3rd round its not an excuse its just a fact. But it doesnt take anything away from Hughes but still Hughes didnt prove to be the more talented fighter in the match, he proved to be more well-conditioned
facts still remain that Penn is the better striker, better JJ fighter, overall better on the ground, and still the ultimate mismatch for Hughes, Penn is just amazing in every category, he just needs better conditioning.. and he proved that hes a better fighter then Hughes in the first 2 rounds.. Hughes CANNOT take down a 100% BJ Penn he would have to wear him out to take him down thats been proven in both fights now, he cannot outstrike him, he definently cannot submit him, its the ultimate goal for Matt Hughes to take down BJ Penn and GnP when Penn is 100% but Matt still did a good job and won the fight FAIR AND SQUARE because Matt survived the first two rounds and took advantage of a hurt Penn, and got him in a situation where Penn couldnt get out of and finished the fight YOU GOTTA GIVE MATT HUGHES CREDIT, but honestly not much has changed.

Like ken shamrock said during TUF 3, if you bust of your ribs bad, you can't breathe, and barely move.
