i actually wouldn't mind seeing a huge mat instead of a cage or ring. you know, like those abu dhabi events.
I disagree.. the mat sounds cool, but they would be stopping the fights all the time, and the wrestlers grapplers would be running from the strikers all the time. I think the cage compliments the striker and grappler equally, and is the best environment for MMA fighting.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned clinching yet. It seems like someone who utilizes the clinch a lot would be better suited for a cage. I've seen a lot of PRIDE fights where the guy who is clinched against the ropes uses the leverage of the ropes to lean backwards so their upper body is out of the ring, making it difficult for the clinching fighter to do any striking. It seems that the cage would favor a clincher who would be able to back their opponent into the fence, much like a wrestler would use the fence to back up his opponent and get a takedown.

Personally, I prefer watching fights in a cage.

I prefer the cage, the only way to improve the competition would be to implement the world famous Yappapi Indian Strap.

The cage favors pure wrestlers just as much, if not more then the ring favors strikers. I agree with Intellectual that an abu dhabi mat would be the Ideal platform for mma but I don't mind ring or cage, no prefference, both have pros and cons. Both is way better then "the Yamma" any day

i think i remember wandy saying when he's corned against the ropes, he can use them to bounce back and put more force in to his punches. he couldnt do that in his fight w/ chucky @ ufc 79 as chuck would back him against the cage and just go to work on him.

A ring is designed to keep two standing fighters in the fighting area. A cage is designed to keep two fighters in any position in the fighting area. Since MMA fights can take place in multiple positions, the cage is the more appropriate forum.
