There is an actual ailment called The Devil's Grip. It sounds like a light form of what happened to Penn. My wife got it for a while and it would make her just stop, curl up, and try to catch her breath. I can imagine what a seperated rib feels like and what it will do to your performance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil%27s_grip
On a side note...about 3 weeks ago I picked Hughes in round three by TKO. God damn it I should have gone to Vegas. The post is floating around here somehwere.

Personally, I believe that he did hurt his rib. Something happened to him at the end of the second round. BJ Penn is a true warrior in my opinion. I do not believe has was gassed out. I have had injured and cracked ribs from grappling... it is the damnedest thing, but it has happened to me... I was not hit in the ribs, I just spun, torqued, rolled and *POP - I couldnt friggin move or sleep for the next four weeks.
I believe him so I am hoping for Hughes-Penn III | I believe it but it doesn't matter. I fight in MMA events (very small ones) and it doesn't matter why you lose or how you lose...IF YOU LOSE YOU LOSE. BJ/Hughes III would probably be a very good fight, but BJ lost to GSP and to Hughes. Time to back up a bit behind GSP, Diego, Karo, or even drop to 155 which is probably where he should fight to reach max potential

If you remember the fight he was kind of sitting up when he was trying to take his back and he had his side bent at a weird angle. I guess that's when it happened

He says Matt won the fight straight up and gives him all the credit of being a great champion. BJ is truly a class act. I think people mistake his confidence for cockiness sometimes. He just believes in his ability.

The injury is legit, but I think he was thinking of it more then the fight.

c'mon now, rd 1 and 2 he was perfectly fine and rd 3 he had his hands down, couldn't sprawl and let matt get him it the crucifix. i grapple and the crucifix can be escape, especially from a bjj black belt. watch the fight closely, matt passed bj's guard sloppy, even if bj was gassed matt still wouldn't have passed bj's gaurd and get the crucifix that easy. watch when the crucifix was on bj, bj did not move one bit, all he moved was his head. props to matt and bj, but people don't gas that quickly, you would've seen bj gas in the middle of the round, but he finished rd 2 strong, and as for the tri/arm lock, bj wasn't using a lot of strength, you use you legs, not your arms, and when you have a figure4 on not much power or stregnth is required. matt diserved the win, and bj did not make excuses, so for all those grappling/fighting illeterate people posting, know how it feels before making judgments or decisions and you folks can find a job at nevada as a ufc judge. :grinsmile26:

You can call me a biased all you want but Penn was the better fighter. He was landing shots and even when he was on his back, Penn was more effective.
I believe Penn's injury because he was just out after the second round and I don't think anyone can make up an elaborate story like that. He wasn't even using it as an excuse anyways.
I am just pissed because Penn should have won this fight and it was an awesome fight. Penn is one of my favorite fighters and he seemed destined for another upset.
Lastly, Dana White is a cocksucker. I love how he wanted jump all over hughes balls after the fight. What a cocksucker he is.
Well, so it is 1-1 and that one loss was due to a injury. Lets have a final one. I hope Hughes beats GSP and Penn make Hughes retire in their final fight.
BJ the Champ.
I cant fucking believe he lost...
