| Griffin/Bonner 1 Comparison
For me it was the one saving grace to the show. Really enjoyed it.
I think Mauro was dead on in making the comparison to Griffin/Bonner 1. It definitely had that feel to it. A debuting product, something on the line and two guys just giving it their all. If it wasn't for the stoppage it would have been a classic. I really didn't "get" the booing in the first round but mind you I never really "get" the booing during fights.
Hopefully the rematch will deliver in the same way but it had that one of kind feel to it, like the planets were in line or something. I have my doubts that the rematch will be as good. I hope they prove me wrong

In round 2 Smith was much more agressive and was winning the exchanges in the clinch. Both fighters were taking a beating and it was a back and forth battle the whol time.
If it took place in the UFC this thread would be called "Lawler vs Smith FIGHT OF THE YEAR"?.
Apparently though I'm one of the few people that are actually watching the fights...
Don;t worry though nuthuggers, WEC tonight, should give you plenty to talk abotu later and I'm sure some of you brain children are goign to compare last nights elite card to the WEC card.
It will be interesting reading some of your comments and comparisons.
But honestly, this website is kinda dumbing it down. We're gaining idiots and losing intelligent posters at an alarming rate.
But I will end it on a positive note for you followers...
UFC UFC Dana White UFC MMA = UFC! | LOL...well said...

Of course, I like watching 1-0 baseball games because pitcher battles rule!
Call me boring,
G | You Fail!!!! Great fight stopped short, if it was in the UFC people be talking about it all day.

The fight was better than expected. However, I do not feel it was as good as everyone is saying. The main reason being there was not a whole lot of back and forth action (mostly Smith's swinging missed). The fight felt way too one-sided, and the only time Smith did super well (other than hitting a haymaker every once in a while) was when Smith used the muy thai clinch (plum) to perfection. Lawler did decent after being in the clinch for a while, but overall he did not like being in there and looked lost while in it (a la Rich Franklin). I actually believe Smith can beat him in their second bout if he uses the muy thai plum (spelling?) way more often.
Let me also say that I did enjoy it and it did have its moments...but, it was way a little sloppy (though not even close to Colusses-Kimbo sloppiness)

That's his game, he's always fought like that. If you only watch fights for technical standup, you're not going to enjoy much MMA outside of Anderson, Machida, GSP, Manhoef, Penn, Kang, Akiyama, Kid, and a few others.
Wanderlei is not a technical striker either and is prolly the most exciing fighter in the sport.

I think they stopped it cause he said twice that he couldn't see. Even though he would have recovered in the 5 mins. the doctor/ref I think was forced to stop it because of what he said.

i wasnt that impressed with lawler last night, i thought he was going to crush smith, he seemed to gas out early and the longer the fight went i was going with smith, lawler just seemed sloppy, i liked the fight in general, they put on a good show and i want to see the rematch

Its kind of sad that everyone tends to bash the fighters because of what org they are with.Smith and Lawler put on a helluva fight that was just as good as any stand up war ive seen in UFC this year.Yeah the stoppage sucked but its mma shit happens.I really dont see how Elite is a "circus" other then the fact that they promote a well known street fighter on their main cards. To me thats no different then UFC promoting a former pro wrestler to go against a washed up Mark Coleman.
