Yeah I really enjoed that fight too.
I have to say, Lawler looked great. But he got caught a couple times.
I think Smith made a mistake. in reality I think he could see fine, but was trying to ask for the 5 minutes so he could rest up. he was gassed. But he made a really bad mistake saying he couldn't see twice. I also don't think he was trying to get the fight stopped. he just said the wrong thing.
I don't think the doctor had any choice. I don't think it made any difference that it was a network fight. it's like was said in the interview, when you tell a doctor twice that your can't see, they have no choice but to stop it.

They both looked pretty exhausted in the 3rd, and I think Smith would have taken it just due to being the fresher of the two fighters. Compared to the other fights on the card it was a masterpiece. | OK Dexter going to have to disagree... Lawler won the first 2 rounds 10-9 and was winning the third round until the BS stoppage. I think if the fight would have continued after a 5 minute break, Lawler would have gotten the (t)ko in the third, Lawlers body kicks did a tremendous amount of damage to Smith, and zapped his power pretty good.

Smith looked fresher to me and he seemed to follow the pattern of taking some abuse and then coming back with a substantive offense - almost as if he was clearing his head and refocusing while taking shots, or he was spurred into an attack by the punishment he was receiving. It would have been nice to see how it would have played out, that's for sure.

He took Lawler's best shots and kept coming back. Earned my respect. His ground game has always been suspect but in a stand up-bang up war, he did alright. Regardless how I feel about the rest of the show, I will tune in to watch the rematch.

When lawler hit smith with that body kick and he winced in pain and didnt rush in for the kill, he just shook his head no and cicled some with him...was he shakin his head in reference to the knockout that smith got against sell when he rushed in and dropped him. And was sayin that wasnt gonna happen then.

People who are whining about a premature stoppage don't know what their talking about.
This also builds hype for them to headline their next event.

^^ Agreed. To Rivet and the quotes.
When you say, "I can't see"... you don't need "5 minutes", you need a doctor.. end of story.
Great fight.

Great fight. | uhh... when I get poked in the eye... guess what?
I can't see... but about 3 mintues later and with the help of some water guess what?
I can see... as normal... no doctor needed... right back to driving...
Bottom line = after 5 minutes if you can't see stop the fight...
Setting up a rematch should not be motivation for a stoppage, there could have been a wealth of rematch potential had the fight continued... it was a piss poor stoppage and inexcuseable prior to the 5 minute mark...
