| Smith/Lawler - A Good Fight?
I have been reading the long threads about the XC event and was very surprised how much love this fight got. To me, it just looked like a couple of hacks swinging at each other. There were moments of technique (Smith's kicks which were working) but mostly just swinging. I thought the Machida/Tito fight was light years ahead of this one. The entire UFC 84 card was better for that matter. I guess I would rather watch a tactical battle over a slugfest. Of course, I like watching 1-0 baseball games because pitcher battles rule!
Call me boring,
G

It was a pretty good fight, the stoppage all but ruined it for me though. Utter bullshit. One of the worst stoppages i've seen.

Lawler-Smith had classic written all over it and would have been just that without that stoppage. It sucks that they stopped and robbed those 2 of history.

Yeah this was a good fight. (Before the BS stoppage.) It wasn't a couple of idiots swinging for the fences. Some of the best exchanges came from the clinch. It was an awesome fight, but can't compare to the Tito vs Machida fight.
There is a reason that fight was on PPV, because the UFC has a better level of fighters. Why do you think Smith never got a title fight in the UFC?
He's good, but not that good.

It was a brawl - I was enjoying it and was dumbfounded by the stoppage. That being said, the technique wasn't really there, there wasn't a range of skills deployed, and in no way could I consider either fighter in the elite of their division. The fights I've seen from both look pretty much the same as last night's - they just come in and swing as hard as they can. They both looked pretty exhausted in the 3rd, and I think Smith would have taken it just due to being the fresher of the two fighters. Compared to the other fights on the card it was a masterpiece.

All depends upon your definition of a "good fight", obviously. Words & their definitions can be subjective.
IMO one definition of a "good fight" is two guys giving it everything they've got, throwing away most or all of their energy trying to take the other guy out, and each guy managing to stay on his feet during the exchanges, ratcheting the tension higher and higher.
We clearly got that in this fight.
