| Vera On Werdum: With Him Trying Jiu-Jitsu Would Be A Stupid Choice Quote: A Jiu-Jitsu brown belt, who has trained with Xande Ribeiro, would naturally look to go to the ground with any adversary in MMA, right? Wrong. To Brandon Vera, that would not be the best choice when looking to beat Brazilian Fabricio Werdum at UFC 85, to take place this Saturday, in London.
After all, Werdum is not "just" a black belt, but Jiu-Jitsu world champion, winner of the over 99kg category of the ADCC and has submitted five of his last 10 wins in MMA. The Brazilian beat his countryman Gabriel Napao at UFC 80 and with one more win will earn a heavyweight title dispute against Rodrigo Minotauro.
Now, Vera is coming off a loss to big Tim Sylvia by judges' decision, which ended his invincible streak of eight fights.
"With him it's a bit different. Trying Jiu-Jitsu would be a stupid choice. I would do MMA Jiu-Jitsu and hit him. No pretty moves or techniques. I'm not going to try and equal him. I don't know if my Jiu-Jitsu is better or worse, but obviously, it's his strong point. Werdum is at fifth or sixth in the rankings. He certainly is the best fighter I've fought before, but I'm certain I'm a more well-rounded heavyweight," said Vera to Sherdog.com.

We will definitely see a lot of striking on this match, and that's what make this fight more exciting to watch...smart move Vera.

Werdum is to Vera on the ground as Penn was Stevenson. He's just levels above him.
I think Vera will avoid the ground in the first, but after that Werdum will be able to get him down.

However, on the feet I think Vera has the edge...unfortunately for Stevenson that wasn't the case with BJ; Penn had the edge there too IMO.
Either way, I think the winner gets the next title shot so this is a huge fight for both of them. With AA officially gone, there is no one else.

Size, experience, and skill are going to win this for Werdum.
Vera, without a win since 2006, coming off his first loss, and coming off another huge chunk of down time, won't be prepared for Werdum.
Werdum wins via decision, maybe submission...

Werdum isn't that good standing up, Vera should be able to school him there. And Vera has better wrestling so he should be able to keep the fight vertical.
