If its a partial tear, you can walk around even on a torn ACL, and an MCL tear is not nearly as bad. I would imagine that you can walk around even with a complete MCL tear (a complete ACL tear would be hard without physical therapy, but thats a lot worse than an MCL like I said). You can walk around no problem without risk of doing anything bad as long as you dont do anything stupid (basically you just need to avoid anything that involved hard pivoting on the knee). I walked around on a fully torn ACL for a year. I have a friend who partially tore his MCL probable 7 or 8 years ago and never got it fixed. So as you said, you can live life with these ailments, it just makes some things harder.
