| Dana Unhappy w/ Rolling Stones Article, Plus why Lindland was really Fired
According to Dana's close friend Cindy Ortiz: http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma....1286526&page=3
According to Cindy Ortiz, Dana's close friend: Quote:
I spoke to DW again about the Rolling Stone article. There were some things he wanted to be passed along so I took notes of our conversation and then sent them to him to approve before I posted them, which he did a little while ago. The following is what he shared:
He fully expects to be smashed over a lot of what was said. He doesn't deny having made the comments quoted. He is sad and very disappointed with the way the article turned out because it is very one-sided. He hates the article and wishes he hadn't taken a chance to let someone he didn't know get that close to him.
He feels bad for his kids because they are going to read about this someday or hear about it even sooner from someone else. There was so much content the writer could have used that he didn't and while Rolling Stone may have thought taking the "badass" angle would be best to tell the story, it wasn't... but he can’t blame anyone but himself because he chose to do the feature.
DW has no problem with being judged for what he says and/or does as long a writer/reporter tells the whole story because there are always two sides. He may not always be right, but he would rather be called an asshole or a jerk based on the readers being provided both sides of a situation, and then making up their own minds, than he would to be judged based on half of the picture.
It wasn't until the feature was complete and sent to press that he got to see it. There were many parts that he was disgusted with. By allowing someone complete access to him, the way he does business, the UFC and many of the fighters, etc. because they wanted to know and tell it all (good, bad and ugly), he didn't think he was at risk of being screwed over. He will never make that mistake again.
DW absolutely expected he would come across exactly how he can be and had no problem with "keeping it real" and showing the warts and all. Unfortunately, nearly everything printed made it clear he could be outspoken, abrasive, confident/over confident, impatient, condescending, with a big ego and a bad temper/short fuse sometimes. DW made it a point to be more open and share stories about positive things he has done that he hardly ever puts out there because he's such a private person, especially when it comes to himself and his family. Almost none of it made it to print. A perfect example of a one-sided story in the feature dealt with Matt Lindland. The writer spoke to Matt and printed Matt's version of why DW had fired him. What he left out was DW's side, some of which had not been disclosed in the past. The show took place in a casino and they sign agreements with the venues that are absolute. This particular event made it 100% wrong for anything betting related to be directly associated with the UFC, fighters, staff, etc. Not only did Matt show up at the weigh in wearing a t-shirt with the logo of an unapproved sponsor, he had set up his own "booth" to sign autographs on the premises (separate from the UFC's) and posted signage of the unauthorized gambling site sponsoring him. The casino came down on the UFC about it which led to Matt being fired. The RS writer didn't bother sharing that.
At the end of the day, DW learned some valuable lessons and isn’t proud of many things folks will read about him when the magazine hits the newsstand this week. What’s done is done and he’d just like to forget about the whole thing even though he knows that’s not likely to happen.

Dana may say fucked up things and act like an asshole at times but its unfair to only tell one side of the story.

Awww poor Dana. He's SO abused.
And I'm not jealous of him a bit. I don't need envy to dislike someone. I'm sure you don't either.
All bullies are not cowards inside either.
Only fat/ugly girls will tell you that it's only the personality that counts.
etc etc

I read the story and imo it only perpetuates the image Dana has created for himself. In the Lindland story I thought that even though RS didnt go into Dana's side fully it represented his side fairly. I think Dana's just sour cause it didnt make him seem like Santa Claus. But hell they went to the point of saying "he's a light drinker these days" instead of saying he's a recovered alcoholic. You gotta give them points for that.

I say let bygones be bygones and sign "The Law". He may add an interesting component to the MW division.
