"UFC 2009" video game unveiled Friday

The UFC and video-game developer THQ will unveil "UFC 2009" on Friday night's episode of "GameTrailers TV with Geoff Keighley."

The show airs at 1 a.m. ET/PT (late Friday night/early Saturday morning) on both Spike TV and Spike HD.

UFC president Dana White and host Keighley will unveil the first gameplay footage trailer of the upcoming video game, and they'll also feature "two key fighters" who will be featured in the game.

"UFC 2009" is the first videogame to be released as a part of THQ's multi-year deal with the UFC. As MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com) previously reported, a five-year contract gives THQ (which also develops the WWE line of games) exclusive rights to publish the UFC games through the end of 2011 for all console and portable platforms, as well as wireless devices.

The game is tentatively scheduled for release in spring 2009.

"It's always an honor when GTTV has the opportunity to debut the first look at a brand new game, and unveiling THQ's 'UFC 2009' trailer is no exception," Keighley stated. "This game trailer takes fans into the octagon with some of the best UFC fighters in the world and will leave their ears ringing with excitement."

MMA -- and especially UFC -- fans have been clamoring for a new video-game title for some time now. In fact, most gamers say a good MMA video game has never been produced, and most credit PlayStation 2's 2003 release "Pride FC" as the best attempt to date.

sweet, I hope it is like March and not June. Seems like it has been forever since the deal was announced. I just hope it doesnt play TOO much like THQ's WWE games.

I believe they said they want to release the game at the same time as one of the UFC's bigger PPVs events and as we all know, the UFC usually pulls out all the stops for their Super Sunday PPV in February. I am hoping that is when it is.

I am also looking forward to this game. It seems like it would be so difficult to create a good MMA game due to all the variables within the sport. This makes me want to get Xbox live.

THQ will use the same game engine that they used in WWE 2008, I dont think this game will be horrible, but it will take a few years get better. The online will be fun I'm sure. Anyway Ive been waiting for a decent fighting game for sometime now. Cant wait to see the trailer, hopefully they show actual gameplay, sometimes those trailers are a little misleading.
